That's right, the 2019 Golden Brush is upon us.
Starting January 5th (or anytime thereafter), bring in an unpainted miniature as evidence that it is, indeed, unpainted. (It can be glued, modded, and/or primed, if you want.) We will photograph it for posterity! Then, it must be completely painted by February 2nd in order to be entered into our painting contest, which will be judged over the next two weeks by three different panels:
A panel of experts at Nexus,
You, the people, and
Staff at Games Workshop!!
You can enter as many times, in as many categories as you want, but it’s a $5 fee per entry, all of which is converted into prize support. Winners will be announced at the 40k Club Championships, February 23rd and 24th!

Can I send a photo of the unpainted miniature with a newspaper behind it or something? I live about 2 hours away and would prefer not to drive that far if I can avoid it.

Tossed my Transendant C'Tan into the fray. See how it turns out though my attempts last year were kind of 'meh' compared to the insanity that everyone else brought to the table.

I remember you telling me before you started painting your army that you were going to out source. That you were worried that you weren't any good at painting. But I have to say though I like your paint scheme on your Necrons John. You just have to keep working at it. I can tell your getting better at it. Are you going Fire, or warpfire or some other cool idea for your T C'Tan?

Tossed my Transendant C'Tan into the fray. See how it turns out though my attempts last year were kind of 'meh' compared to the insanity that everyone else brought to the table. It's funny, when I started this hobby 20 years ago (Was it really that long? Ouch), I never thought I'd ever be good at painting. I still have some models floating around that I did back then. My friends were all better than me (though none of them still play the hobby anymore. I look at them now and cringe. I look at the models I did 10 years ago and cringe at most of them. But when you compare the first set I did to the sets 10 years later, wow. The difference is huge. Today, I consider myself a solid painter. I'm certainly not top tier, I'll never win best painted or any of the golden brush awards. But, I'm certainly better than I was 5 years ago, and I'm certainly satisfied with my results. As you refine your techniques and learn what you are good at, and what you are not so good at, really helps when you are starting a new scheme. All of my painting recently is based around what I've decided are my 2 best techniques. If I had one tip for me 20 years ago, its realise this sooner. Learn all the techniques, then focus on the ones you think offer you the best setup for success. Keep working at it and you will see progress and success, trust me. And to all those better than me, suck it. Especially Morton.

I'm not better Justin, just more prolific. Honestly, I think we have totally different styles, so I don't think we could really directly compare. I can't freehand. Clean lines just don't happen on my models. Drybrushing? Almost all of my models are, but you won't see it, most of the time it looks airbrushed. Blending? I'm all over that. I'll smoothly scale from Red Gore through Sunburst Yellow (or whatever those colours are called now) But put both of our armies on the table and it would look pretty good. Plus I like picking on you since I never get to see you.

My hope is that I get the look of that it's trying to melt the Necrodermis holding it through sheer unbridled hate and fury.
You know, honorary Angry Marine levels of rage.

Thing is with the golden brush I put something in every year whether or not I get any votes at all (oftentimes my models don't actually!) as it's a good inspiration to take a model and really focus on it. I'm not a golden daemon painter by any stretch but I can get a good solid result that I'm pretty happy with... I certainly could NOT say that when I started.
patience and persistence are the best things you can have. Just keep doing it and don't give up. Focus on what you can do rather than try two brush blending on your first model! start by simply colouring in the lines... then add techniques such as drybrushing etc. as you go. You'd be surprised just how good of a result you get from painting your base coats, applying a wash, then putting the original colour back on while leaving the wash in the recesses. That is pretty much the basis for most of my painting (and then I try and add some tricks from there).
anyone can do it... just need time and patience....

Not entering this year due to time restrictions but the times I have I enjoyed the creative process. Even got the wife involved when I was scrounging for materials to make the coffee mug on the turret of my Russ for it's commander "Jitters". It kind of pushes you in to a different frame of mind. Less focus on micro (tabletop) and more on the macro (artistic, fun, or whatever floats your boat). I look at my work from 30 years ago and it seems pretty primitive but I can see my growth thru the various models over the years as I added details and techniques. I too will never be a Morton or win a best painted, but I'm having fun learning as I go. I think that's actually the point of it all (though titles and prizes are a nice bonus if you can manage it). Really, just challenge yourself and only yourself. And remember to relax and enjoy it.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice. My main entry is in the picture attached. I'm really happy with how it's turned out, and I think it's arguably my best model to date. But I want to take it even further if I can. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for how to do so?
