Well, I cannot deny that the demoralizing situation of constantly removing units and my lack of self esteem and confidence are a fatal combination. I, honestly, should not even be playing, as it is just unfair to everyone else for having to deal with my bullshit. I am a mess of anxiety, not medicated or seeing any sort of 'help' and am in a dangerous state of being desparate and lonely and grasping at straws while.not having the tools to do so in a manner that is mature and fair to those around me. It is nobody's fault but my own. I just do not have the competetive nature needed to play games; I am a bad loser and winning makes me feel guilty. If I am having fun, then someone else is having a shitty time and that does not sit well with me.
My experience, thus far, has been that I slow down games with a combination of my lack of comprehension of the rules and using a horde army. Were I playing anything else, at least the time taken to move units would not he a factor. Games are too long (more accurately; The sense of wasting the other person's time starts to pile on the guilt and I rush and do not bother "trying", so I may as well concede the game.) Having built a list without much ranged damage (the tankbustas are pretty much my "heavy hitter", as big shootas are a joke) the first half of the game is just me removing miniatures and then wondering how my army, at a third of its starting strength, is supposed to melee through a fresh line of power armour. So, why bother?
I have been trying so hard to get out and be social (like people tell me I should be doing) but I just end up feeling worse than before.
What is the point of living if one can never derive enjoyment from it?

For a new player, I ALWAYS recommend buying the rulebook and the codex absolutely first and foremost; before any models are purchased. Research is key before buying anything. I get that it’s less fun to watch a game being played, but there’s guys that’ll help you learn how to play and there’s guys that won’t.
PLUS! Literally everyone here has been in your shoes before in regards to learning the game. Heck, when a new edition comes out, we all have to re-learn the same game. It’s easier said than done, but going easy on yourself is important. Not every game will go your way, but every loss is a learning experience about how to avoid x, y, z or changing what you target, or what you move where and why.

Yeah... A few years ago I saw the Build'n'paint sets and got hella nostalgic and that started the ball rolling on collecting an army. I have one of the Dark Vengeance update booklets (equivalent to the free rules pdf from GW's website) but it lacks a looooooot of information. It has enough to play, but that is it. I do intend to pick up the proper rule book... Eventually...

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. When I first started playing I was playing with a group of experienced player who had years of experience, and I didn't win a battle for the first two years I played!
Don't get discouraged by having to pick up models. Especially since your first experience playing was mostly tournament games where folks are bringing either an army they are most comfortable with and may be finely tuned into a mighty war machine.
The big key to playing any army with lots of models like orks, nids or guard is to appreciate the value of trading. So what if they kill 30 orks? You've got 90 more. Orks are some of the best combat units in the game and have a pretty steep learning curve. But once you get the hang of it you'll be crushing folks with your waaaaaagh no problem.
If you'd like I've been debating putting up some beginner to intermediate tactics and battle planning guides and you might just be able to give me to kick I need to finish them and start getting them up on the boards here.

Ray brings up a good point in the "Don't get discouraged by having to pick up models."; GW intentionally made 8th edition VERY bloody. Units die a lot easier in 8th than they ever have before. Removing lots of models isn't unheard of, and was another big change for all of us.

First off, let me clarify that WINNING has not been the goal. "Coming close to feeling like I had any chance" and "evenly-matched games" are my current goal. I can handle losing, not so much crushing defeats (which is what the majority of the games have felt like. Probably because I had been learning playing against lists for the event.) "How are my Nobz and Painboy and few remaining Boyz supposed to chew through an entire gunline, on their own?" (I fail to believe that Orks are THAT good in melee) I still do not like the idea of having to rely on teleportation, but if it is what I must do, then y'all can prepare yourselves for Orks to the face. (Once I start remembering to use Strategems and that I have a Psychic phase) If you have some good thoughts on tactics and strategy, then by all means; feel free to share with us!

Here's one of the podcasts I listen to on the regular. I went to this event a couple of weeks ago and Nick, one of the main hosts, has been playing orks pretty much exclusively for a year now. They go through each of their games played and talk quite a bit about orks and some nifty strategies. Nick snagged second best overall with a 3-0 record for the day, so he knows what he's talking about. They also review beer in between talking about Warhammer, so the podcast feels tailored to my interests haha. Inches and Cubes

Coolbeans, thanks! I have never listened to a podcast, before, so this should be neat. Bonus points for Canadian content, too!

Best way to take a loss is to turn it in to a learning moment. I just turned in my worst tournament performance in 15 - 20 years at the Great Crusade. Discouraging, you bet! But not defeating as a player. I could see some of my mistakes immediately, some of which were related to not understanding either the codex I was facing (don't know about anybody else but there are too many for me to memorize even if I could afford all the books) or how the pieces of that army synergized to get unexpected results. My opponents were all great about explaining things when I had questions. Perhaps the best take away from a loss is DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! You may be surprised by how many people in the community WANT to help you be a better player because that leads to better game experiences for everybody. Any BTW, congratulations on setting realistic expectations re. game results as a new player. It goes a long way to staying with the game as you work your way through the learning curve.

Can a Deffkopta drop its Big Bomb after falling back? The bomb is normally dropped on a unit the kopta flew over in the movement phase; if the Deffkopta Falls Back and moves over top of the unit it was engaged with, may it still drop the bomb, regardless of having fallen back? The Deffkopta does have the Fly keyword.
This is, mostly, me not being confident enough to say, for certain, that it is indeed possible. There must be some reason I should not have been able to have dropped a Big Bomb after falling back with the Deffkopta.

unit with fly can shoot normally after falling back... only thing you cannot normally do is charge

You can drop a bigbomm as you fall back. If you bought the uprade, and if you haven't already used it during the battle, that is.

Coolbeans and thanks guys!
I have a pile of ordnance from old 1/72 scale model planes. Should I just use those... Or make comically over-sized bombs?

Comically over-sized will get my vote every time.

But not so comically that you completely unbalance and damage your models. (Yeah, guilty. Funny bone got in the way of good judgement.)
