Just getting started into 40k, hope that I can find some players to help me learn the ropes and make some friends.

Welcome, the Kingston 40k community is always welcoming new players no matter what faction you chose to run. If you're looking for some 'tutorial' games we tend to show up around or just past noon on Saturdays though you can post in the 'Game Coordinator' forum to see if anybody wants to meet up at X time and date.
Though on the 22nd and 23rd of February the 40k Club Championships is happening so there won't be any free tables on that weekend.

Thanks, any particular size of army is best to start learning with?

If you just want to learn the basics 500 pts should do the trick. Plays quickly, not a large investment, and leaves plenty of time to ask questions and learn the intricacies of the game. My advice, play the army whose models are the most appealing to you, not the "net list best". You'll spend more time painting and assembling than playing, so you need to appreciate the army's aesthetic.
Some of our community's best players at our tournaments play "off meta" armies

Welcome! As has been said above, start small points wise and we can all certainly help you learn the ropes! Our community is pretty friendly when it comes to list-building, so you certainly don't have to play the latest / best lists out there. Choose an army you like the look of, because you're going to have to build and paint it, and play LOTS of games with it, so make something you enjoy.
Big club champs is near the end of the month, which is a good time to stop by Nexus and see a bunch of different armies fully painted. Otherwise any Saturday there's normally a bunch of us playing and we can answer any questions you may have and run you through your first few games.
