So, to drive away isolation boredom, I figured I'd ask a question here for anyone that cares to answer: What made you decide on the army or armies you have? Why'd you pick them basically. There are many reasons I've seen on other sites, such as "They are strong", "They are simple and easy to use, "They look good", etc. In this case though, I want to know why the local Kingston community picked their armies. I'll start. I picked Ironjawz because I love their overall look. I'll admit, I fell in love with the Brutes kit. Sure, their strategy doesn't amount to much more than to run up and smash things, but I'm fine with that. I've tried to make armies before based on what I was told was strong or what I should do, and that just ends up with me being miserable. I'm much happier picking based on how they look and what I like, hahaha. I have my eyes on some more armies to get a second (and third, fourth, etc) faction as well. There are so many cool looking Age of Sigmar armies.

When i started playing warhammer fantasy with a friend i picked up the lizardmen. not quite the same as they are now but still. lizard people with dinosaurs whats not to love.
Never really got into the painting or modeling at the time to i traded them. I now have tzeentch deamons as you can play them in both 40k and aos if i so choose. Kind of wish i had kept them some of the new models are awesome looking and i have got into paining and such but i mostly play 40k anyway

I always pick an army which I can see wanting to paint. It's model based only (with some eye to how an army plays - I don't like gunline armies so Tau for example holds zero interest to me). For the most part I always look at the idea of will I want to paint this army, because I try my best to have 100% painted armies on the table.
The armies I haven't liked their playstyle I usually sell after I paint them... but painting is the primary motivator for me. And yes, I will buy an entire army just to paint them.

I worked on picking my army for AoS for about five years. So, I guess I'm pretty unqualified to answer this ha.
While AoS sounded interesting to me, the aesthetic of the new factions never really grabbed me. The one exception being the daughters of khaine, but the price of troops turned me off of them.
All the broken up remnants of the older armies just seemed to scream "stay away, we're never going to be supported". I wanted to play, but couldn't settle on an army that looked good and actually felt like a complete faction. I toyed with the idea of dark elves for a while, but finally decided as a new player it was best to avoid investing in the slow death that is cities of sigmar (after it finally arrived).
Early this year I found an old beastmen battalion for cheap and finally took the plunge. Always liked their style and was very happy to learn their battletome condensed some of those silly mini factions back into a real army. Since I play Tau in 40k, I am excited to try a completely different style. My army is still quite small and mostly unpainted, but maybe you will see them on the table one day.

While I don't play Beasts of Chaos, I must admit that they have some amazing looking models, and I've been very tempted to get a start collecting for them, hahaha. I have no idea how they play though. As for the whole aesthetic thing, I understand. While I personally like the look of more Age of Sigmar armies than I do 40K armies (I like the look of AdMech and Orks the most, with a few models from otehr factions here and there), I am a fervent believer that you should pick based on what you like the look of. That being said, I hope you enjoy your Beasts of Chaos.

Dammit! Now that I've looked up Beasts of Chaos, they are on my list of factions to look at for my next army, hahaha.

I would also stress that it's not that I really dislike the look of AoS armies, although cow elves really stretch that statement. Idoneth just took a running leap to jump the shark. Bonereapers have cool elements, but just went too far. I think that's my major critisim with most of the newest armies though. I'm not a "dial to 11 and break off the knob!!" kind of guy.
It's more that I struggled to find a look that felt a good fit for me. Orcs and goblins are great, and all the ghosty death is awesome. Would love to play against them, just doesn't resonate with me so much.
I look forward to eventually expanding my beasts into slaanesh, tzeentch, and slaves to darkness friends. Even if only for cool painting projects. So I guess it's chaos for me!

Well, I hope you're happy. I might end up buying the Beasts of Chaos start collecting box, hahaha. I like the look of them, and even for the models I don't really like the look of, such as the centigors or the chariot, well, I saw some things online about how to kitbash your own (Although I can't find the link anymore, so I'd have to search again).
EDIT: I feel I should clarify that I meant the first sentence in a joking tone. I don't mean to accidentally insult you.

Haha yeah I got you, no worries. I plan on grabbing the start collecting after I finish painting what I have. Should get 2 I suppose. Then more ungors. So many ungors.
I'm of the same mind with the centigors and chariot. It's mostly the tuskgors I want to replace for the latter (need boarboys). For the centigors I figured a box of gors and marauder cavalry should do it. On the plus side, buying a box of each will cost about as much as 5 of the resin models
I also have plans for a kitbashed shaggoth and beastlord. It may all end up looking like hot garbage, but who said chaos needs to be pretty?

You're right, Chaos doesn't have to be pretty, or even uniform. I mean, it's in the very name itself, hahaha.

I have three partially finished armies, none of which I would say I really 'chose'.
Orruk Warclans - Already had a bunch of Black Orcs from WHFB (closest I've come to choosing an army, really like black orcs) Stormcast Eternals - Won one of the Soul Wars boxes at the santa tournament and traded for the other one Cities of Sigmar/Dwarves - inherited from my dad
Of the three I really adore the orcs and dwarves, but the SCEs I just kind of... have. They were probably at the bottom of my list for an army to build for Sigmar and I still think it's funny that I ended up with a bunch of them.

Black orcs became the Ironjawz Ardboys, right? At least, I think I remember reading that somewhere. Could be wrong.

Yes indeed! Same thing, basically. Difference is in lore, where Ironjawz are now the 'better breed' of elite heavily armoured orcs which used to be what the black orcs were back when regular orcs existed.

I picked Maggotkin when I randomly watched WARHAMMERTV Duncan doing a Blightking tutorial, I was like “I WANNA PAINT THAT!” and iv been in love with everything Nurgle since, I actually don’t think that army has a single model I don’t like... I mean Festus and Tallyman models need an update... I hate resin lol so besides 2 models I adore everything Maggotkin have to offer.
I also love the idea of Nurgle and the Great Unclean Ones dotting and cheering on their mortal followers, that’s awesome lol
And the book PlaugeGarden was super insightful (also that book made StormCast cool, I loved how they were portrayed in that book)
