yeah smashcaptains etc. will ruin his day... but they ruin ANY necron character's day! At least 7 wounds at T6 with living metal isn't easy to shift for many regular units and he has an actual chance to outfight those types of attackers who could easily hunt a regular cryptek (or old Szeras!)
so it's not perfect of course, but for 20 points more than the old version, I think he's MUCH improved.
however I also generally play some version of melee with my necrons, so he would actually fit pretty well into my style of lists. I can see where he might not be that attractive for some lists though.

You guys missed the coolest part of this. Master Techonmancer. Since as you said Shannon that this is likely written with 9th in mind.
The Nano-Scarab reanimation beam from the canoptek reanimatior which adds 1 to reanimation. It looks like these two abilities stack. So essentially your RP rolls are on a 3+.
I like this guy. The fluff part is also cool. Necrons are up to something sinister for the galaxy. Looks like they have found a way to convert flesh into more Necrons / enhancements with the atomic energy manipulator. I wonder if this is it. The pariah nexus is making all but the most devout catatonic which are then converted into more Necrons.
Illuminor Szeras also has some black stone. Which GW has mentioned a few times “ look at the strange rock on his shoulder”. Well looks like Necrons are getting a anti Psyker ability. The new Monolith has soooo much more Blackstone. Looking forward to the new rules for that.
I always liked Szeras, now I look forward to using him on the battle field. Painting is going to be soooo much fun.

They're 'lived' through events much like this once already and are probably not interested in experiencing War in Heaven aftermath 2.0, the Psyker Boogaloo. Speaking of which, how do you think they did the 'life-drain' part of the model? Because at first glance I'm thinking a cream or flesh-colored base with shades of pink, red then purple (druchii violet for the darkest parts) to get the gradient.

The GW website explains the colours needed to paint him. www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Necrons-Illuminor-Szeras-2020?Pmp=contrast&Pep=prod4190166,prod4190281-prod4210427,prod4210338 I suspect they used Contrast paints for the ease of transtion of color So. Wraith Bone to start, followed by a mixture of Contrast Medium and Volupus Pink, to Voluptus Pink. Then on the other end used Druchii Violet and brought it the other direction. A couple thin layers.

Well the pariah materials arrived in store today (or at least my pre-order Szeras did) and after a quick once over I have to say I really like the design.
-Datasheet (power level only) is included so I don't need to copy from someone.
-The detailing has really improved to where they even include little dings and scraps on the model pieces.
-Related to this nearly all the sections I've checked so far aren't relying on simple flat connections or vague ball joints. Instead it's properly interlocking pieces where there aren't even any real gaps as a result in the sections I've tested.
-We're going to want to assemble and paint this guy in sections. Because from the looks of it so far, there is going to be a lot of still-visible detail that will be hell to get at if you try to paint a fully assembled version.

Ive assembled mine without painting. I’m going to be doing some praying* to the Silent king in order to paint every part. I posted it in my painting page. There were a lot of... “where does that connect”. Probably should have painted in pieces but... we’ll see what happens.
* praying followed by cursing.
