So, the new generals handbook is supposed to have rules for how to create a hero for open and narrative play, but GW has supposedly said that if you multiply the "destiny points" used to make the hero by 10, you have a match play points value for them. I won't know for sure until the book drops though.
This has me interested. I wouldn't mind having a custom hero for my Ironjawz, and since people here mostly played matched play games, it would be cool if we can get matched play points for them.
So, if they do have rules for matched play points, what is the general consensus on using them in Thursday evening games? This is when the nexus is able to do that again of course.

I wouldn't have a problem playing against a custom character made this way... if the rules are there I don't think there's an issue with playing it... we're pretty laid back

There is a guideline for matched play points - 1 "Destiny Point" (the currency with which you build heroes) is equivalent to 10 points.
Just be careful. It's pretty easy to create some broken stuff (either intentionally, or by accident). Any Hero can have a 5 Attack, 2+/2+/-2/5 damage bow for a modest fee. Any faction can build a Hero with Ethereal (ignore all Rend) and a 2+ save characteristic, etc.

That's true. To be fair, while I haven't seen the full rules yet (Just some grainy photos of some of the pages), I'd try to stick to things that would make sense for my faction. In the case of Ironjawz, I'd likely avoid ranged things for example, as they don't really like that.
Mostly I just want an excuse to try to kitbash something that would end up being rules legal without just being a "counts as" model, hahaha.

You can do it as long as you're prepared to ask your opponent's permission every single time it hits the table, which is what you're gonna have to do unfortunately. At the end of the day it's not what we'd call 'tournament legal', but neither is perhaps most of the stuff in the broader game.

Definitely worth playing around with it! It's still super new, remains to be seen if it's something people will play with for a few weeks and then get bored of or something that gets popular enough for GW to embrace it into the future.
Kitbashing is its own reward though so I'd go for it regardless if you like that kind of stuff. At the end of the day you'll still have a cool mini you can use as a Gore-grunta/Brute/Megaboss whatever!
