here are three ideas.
First is the idea i have every year but this year is probably the worst year for it
Blood angels Battalion
Dante (warlord)
Mephiston
Brother corbulo
2 x 5 intercessors
5 man tac marine squad, one lascannon
3 man eradicator squad
Blood angels Battalion
Astorath
The sanguinor
lemartes
3 x 5 intercessors
1500 points. so bad lol 9 cp. eradicators are only there cause i needed some anti tank. No transports or even death company cause i needed troops to have more hq's lol
Now something i might actually bring
Daemons Battalion
the changling (warlord)
Fluxmaster staff
Daemon prince of tzeetch, wing, talons, impossible robe.
2 x 12 pink horrors
30 pink horrors
5 flamers
burning chariot
2 x soul grinders with warpclaws
1497 points.
changling may lose the final battle and daemons aren't super great but two big soul grinders running down the field with a prince to back them up. lol
This last one is probably the most competitive of them.
Iron hands battalion
Iron father feirros warlord
chapter master on bike, storm sheild, power axe (axe of medusa)
indomitus primarus lieutenant, (burning blade)
3 x 5 intercessors
dreadnought ccw, storm bolter and lascannon
ironclad dreadnought, chain fist, hurricane bolter, assult launchers
redemptor dreadnought, heavy onslaught, onslaught, icarus rocket pod
unit of 3 landspeeders with heavy bolters and assultcannons
predator with all lascannons
1499 points

ouch that BA list... ummm... well it's got a lot of heroes? I'm not sure it's a good idea though, but I think you knew that already.
list two seems pretty fun but not very powerful... it's a good list to have fun with, but not sure how well it would do.
Iron hands is clearly the winner here competitively.. has alot of good tools in it for dealing with tanks, scoring points, and some board control

ya. and idea like the first one was what i was going to bring this year but with 9th's points and the way detachments work this edition kind of killed it.
ya the second does seem fun but as you said may not do well.
the last is a good mix of shooty and close combat. some fast moving and hard to kill. but not too much so i hope

Yeah, 9th definitely killed the BA list. Lemartes with no DC to buff makes me weep a little. =(
I don't know much about Daemons, so I'll refrain from commenting there, but Soul Grinders can be tough customers if you roll well on your invuls and block a few big hits here and there. Through any lists like your Iron Hands list which are packing Dirty Harry levels of heat are gunna just blow those Soul Grinders apart pretty quickly.
The Iron Hands is definitely the most competitive list, it looks pretty fierce with lots of firepower and the Biker CM and Ironclad to play "problem solver" if something does cross your kill zone.
It won't play an aggressive scenario when you need to push hard into your opponent's deployment zone too well (think Scorched Earth where you really want to get over there quickly so you can spend a turn destroying an objective), but the smaller table and Big Guns Never Tire makes going for a stroll across midfield a fairly viable option against all but the nastiest of deathstars.
Honestly, I think if you tried to retool the BA list a bit you could definitely have a fun time with it playing hero-hammer tho. I think it was a couple years ago I brought the Crusade list with all 6 Phoenix Lords + Eldrad and I actually went 2-2 and laughed pretty much the entire time while my 9 model army rampaged around smashing everything to bits. You might have to cut down to like 5 HQs tho (Battalion + Patrol) or something similar to get it to work at 1500 in 9th. (and if you wanna bring Lemartes you really have to find the points for some Death Company cus he makes them just hilarious)

Yes if I did blood Angels I'd need to rework it.
The iron hands one will be pretty easy for me to do and will make me finish my iron father feirros model which has been at 90% complete for like ever. Build my primarus lieutenant and do the land speeders.

I'm thinking soul grinders are going to be good this edition. They are BS 4+ so really benefit from move and shoot. Most importantly, shooting in combat makes them monsters since before you were giving up shooting to fight, and you were paying the points to do both.
I'm thinking (Hoping) this is going to be good for all the daemon engines including defilers and forgefiends (who despite being the shooty ones are still pretty stompy)

I'm hoping they will be good. They can only shoot the harvester cannon into combat as phlegm has blast. But they have a good number of cc attacks as well as fast and ok shooting.

so i tested my tzeetch list yesturday. but only got to turn two as it was both of our first games with 9th.
the one take away is that the large unit of 30 pinks might be very intimidating at the low points level
do people think that it too much? should i try some make a different blood angel list or do iron hands. was going to try to stay away from marines this tournament

a unit of pinks isn't over the top at all, you should be fine...

I certainly didn't mind staring at that huge mass of daemonic gribblyness across the board from me. I was much more intimidated by the pair of soulgrinders charging for my broadsides!

very true. you were able to take out one tho. and really don't know how the rest of the game would have went if you were able to take out the second before i could charge into combat i would have been done for

I think the game definitely could have gone lots of different ways. Would be interested in a rematch some time.
The 30 man unit did get me thinking about morale though. Interested to see how the new rules shake out with the big blobs. Those invul saves should make them hard to actually chew through. Can they get to a 3++ with the psychic power?
The horrors definitely seem to be effective at the board control game. If you can swamp the middle and deny most of the objectives for three turns, you already have your opponent on the back foot. But I imagine it would also be fun to see just how many you could kill per turn. Good times for everyone!

Pinks used to be able to get to a 3++ with a strat but the FAQd it so they can only get to a 4++. I can't recall if theres anything preventing them from holding multiple objectives or not. A unit of 30 holding 2 objectives would do good work.
