Look up OSBGL - Ontario Strategy Battle Game League on Facebook.
They are a large provincial group that runs events all over the province, so you might be able to find someone there.
They are always helpful and happy to have new members.

I played when it first came out and it was pretty fun Rules a relatively easy to pick up and definitely cheaper than 40k (mostly)

I've looked into the game before, but don't really know much about it. It doesn't exactly help that the GW store page seems scattered, and it being hard to figure what factions there are beyond "Good/Evil".
I'm always willing to try new games, but would likely need a lot of help to figure things out in this case. Despite that, if I can figure it out, I'd be willing to give it a shot. Although, I don't own any models for it, so would have to start from scratch.

I feel I should elaborate on what I said about the factions.
If you go under "Hobbit - Good" You find a few categories, with the largest having 8 units, and the smallest being 2. In the Evil category, there are some with only 1 unit. This same thing applies to Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit. Compare this to 40K, or AoS (At least, now. AoS used to have the same problem) and you see that the factions are well defined, so you can look on the store page, see that you like the look of a faction, and go from there. With LotR here, it seems that without the rulebook, it's hard to tell what I should look at to decide what sort of faction I'd want.
I hope this doesn't dissuade anyone from the game, I'm just trying to get some clarification so I know what to look for.

Hobbit has a smaller range because it's newer and they honestly didn't make as many models, and lot of the ones came during the period when GW stopped supporting their non-AOS and 40k rangers. So some stuff are harder to come by, or slowly making their way back, or are Forgeworld, like Iron Hill or Azog stuff. LoTR trilogy has a lot more options since they been around for longer and they been releasing campaign books to bolster the range There may or may not be the rulebook and army list on the internet Otherwise I suggest utilize battle scribe to browse around.

The game is broad stroke broken down to good and evil and have some related rules associated with good or evil. Beyond that, I think factions have their own thing going for them and there's nothing stopping from 2 good or 2 evil army playing against each other.
