Sure, some units have options. Spears or maces? Two weapons, or a shield? But you make the choice for the unit, and everyone is equipped in the same way.
Enter tzaangors. So, first I decided to pick shields instead of two hand weapons. Ok fine, that's a decision made for the whole group. But then comes the special weapons. Now I get to upgrade 4 out of 10 to great weapons, and 2 out of 10 to dual wielding mutants. There is also a leader, a banner, and a musician to model.
What I ended up doing was a bit of converting to give my leader, musician, and banner bearer the great weapon upgrades. That leaves 1 normal great weapon dude, 2 dual wielding mutants, and 4 sword and shield users in a unit of 10.
Now however, I'm left with four different attack profiles to deal with in combat. Leader, great weapon, mutant, sword/shield.
I feel like adding a more elite unit to speed up my gameplay (instead of adding another 90 ungors) may have backfired. Who would have guessed tzeentch was the complicated path....

So, I just looked up the Tzaangor warscroll, and good lord it is complicated. For what it's worth, it's not usually so convoluted, and the upgrades and such are more straightforward for most units. At least, that's been my experience so far. So, it sucks that you're having a bad experience.

Ha, not really a bad experience, but definitely more involved than my other builds. I spent a bit of time trying to make sure I was even allowed to give weapon upgrades to leader/musician/banner models. Seems like it's all good though. Mutants are the only special model whose weapon is specified.
Plus the converting was (mostly) fun! It's a cool kit, with a bunch of options, so I was able to make 30 unique models out of the three boxes I built. Banner/musician plus great weapon combos were a bit tricky, but I like how they all turned out.
We'll see how much I like them when it comes time to play.
Magnetizing the enlightened so I could use them on disks or on foot. Now that was obnoxious. Fortunately my time with tau meant I had a good supply and a bit of practice at least.

Well, that's good to hear that it's wasn't as bad as I thought.
