ROFL a full sized game of HH is considered 3000 pts
I guess that explains why the starter box is nearly 2k pts on its own

Obviously it kinda depends on the army but what do folks think is the best way to split the box?

Yeah, I just bought 2 chaos halves of eldritch omens for $200. 10 infantry models, 2 characters, and two monster/vehicles. I'm trying to convince myself I got a good deal, but deals shouldn't make me feel quite this queasy, haha.
HH box doesn't sound terrible for the price, compared to recent 40k releases, but I hope everyone who jumps in is damn sure this isn't just an impulse/FOMO buy.
Personally, I wouldn't split the new box at all if I was just starting out. May not need the spartan and both characters every game, but I'm sure I'd want to put the rest on the board pretty much every time.

Yeah obvi the best outcome is to have everything but I might not have the 400 dollars and I have a friend who's interested in splitting too

Yeah that's fair. Kind of the problem I'm running into with these new box sets. Deal or not, it's a lot of money to throw down at once.
If I was looking to split with someone, the easy start would be 20 marines, and a character per side. I guess I'd just have to talk out the rest with them. Figure out the army you want to build, and if the other models would be important to the theme.
Splitting 10 terminators in half is easy enough if you both wanted them. Not so simple with the dread and spartan. One is obviously going to have a higher price tag than the other. I think there are some pretty decent estimates to be found about what the standalone cost of those kits will be, to give an idea of the relative difference.
So I guess it boils down to figuring out who wants what, and then doing your best to split the cost appropriately. There's also the rulebook to consider of course. Not sure if you're planning on sharing that, or someone picking up their own once it becomes available. I'm not even sure if they're going to price that like a supplement or a full core book.
Sorry I'm not really able to nail it down any easier than that. Not sure any of that counted as advice, but it's how I'd go about it, anyway.
