It wasn't a horrible experience.
We played some 3rd ed Orks vs Space Marines.
Table quarters, extermination mission. Nice and simple.
Orks had a unit of Choppa Boyz, 'Ard Boyz, Tankbustas (no rokkits) Warboss with Nobz, Mega armoured Big Mek, a trio of kannons.
Space Marines had 2 Tac squads, a Devastator squad, Razorback, Dreadnought, 5 Termies, a unit of Scouts.
Game went to turn 5 and felt swingy until about late turn 3, in to 4.
Game starts and Orks take the initiative and charge ahead, not really managing to hit anything with the opening volley of their fire.
The Space Marines, however, were far more successful with their shooting, downing half of the 'Ard Boyz that had burst forth - but it was not enough to deter the remaining Orks, who were convinced in the integrity of the Mek's armour slabs they were wearing.
The Razorback moved up a flank and disgorged a Tac Squad behind a building... Behind which the Tankbustas were laying in wait!
While the far flank exchanged shots, as the Boyz advanced, the near flank was turned in to a meatgrinder as the 'Ard Boyz saw the Tac Squad jump out of the Razorback and managed to make it in to melee with them. It was not a good scene, for the Marines, as the press of Ork bodies and 'Eavy Armour was too oppressive - eventually, the Sergeant made a heroic last stand. Meanwhile the Tankbustas were laying in to their transport, which was immobilized by a lucky hit from one of the Orks. Once it had stopped, the Orkz figured out how to properly place the bombs and managed to send the tank up in a spectacular explosion... Taking out 4 of the Tankbustas with it!
The Space marine shooting was doing what it does best - felling Orks by the numbers - and the squad of Boyz, on the far flank, finally decided that these 'Umies weren't worth the hassle and turned tail, their Big Shootas chattering insults back towards the Marines, as they fell back. The Devastator Squad had taken better than it gave, making good use of their missiles and plasma weapon (though, a catastrophic failure of that caused a fair amount of laughter from the advancing Orks)
While lumbering forward, the Big Mek managed a miracle and landed its sole Rokkit, from its kombi-rokkit, in a weak spot in the Dread's armour, popping it in one go.
With the Marines' heavy armour out of commission, the Orks made a push towards a victory that was not to find them, that day, as their numbers had been thinned too far, by this point. The Termies and remaining Tac Squad and Devastators made short work of those remaining Orks.
The Gretchin, in the back, with the Kannons, were just laughing at all the destruction before them - what else were they to do? The Marines had stayed out of range, or line of sight, for most of the battle.
Over-all, even with having to relearn the game as we played, it was considerably less stressful an experience than a lot of my games of 8th and 9th. It was good to get to push some Orks around and make Dakka Dakka noises.
