Well, thanks to Shannon, I had fun playing 40k for the first time in quite a while. And that of course means that I start thinking about some other army to play now that I've only got my Eldar.
I'm thinking some kind of Marine army, because convertability of the models is really important, and I'd like to pick something up that will always be useful, and marines can always be stripped and repainted to match the newest book if something ever gets royally screwed.
That said, I'm looking for flavour over power here completely...It's not like I'll go out of my way to build a BAD list, but I could care less about optimizing my list or finding the nastiest builds in a codex...I'm really looking for something that follows the fluff of the chapter/legion properly and gives me some cool modeling opportunities, while still being half decent at least.
I've at least somewhat narrowed it down in my mind to three armies I've been tempted to put together at various times, but never actually got around to doing. Any of these projects will be just that...a project....I'm not intending to have them up and running in record time, more to pick away unit by unit.
1. Alpha Legion: An army I've always been incredibly interested in fluffwise, and one that I went so far as to start briefly before the 4th ed CSM book took away Cultists. This would likely be the slowest build of any of them, at least until I see what a new Chaos Legions book has in store, but I would expect it to be based largely around marines on foot laying down suppressive fire with a strong outflanking/infiltrating presence from Chosen or whatever options are presented, and a possible Terminator unit as deepstriking back-up. I would of course want to include Cultists if the option arises, but would also be somewhat interested in being able to use them cross-over as Codex marines with scouts and veterans.
2. White Scars: Another army I've always been tempted by, and probably my favorite loyalist legion. I've recently gotten over my fear of painting them, and think they could be a fun challenge. The existence of the Chapterhouse jetbikes for a command squad also make me excited! Theme would definitely be an entirely fast and in your face army, with nothing in the way of static support. By the fluff the Scars do not operate Devastator squads and have VERY few heavy weapons in their tactical squads, and refuse to operate Dreads, so those are all out. I'd really be looking at Kor'sarro on Moondrakken and a kitted out bike command squad (pricey and overkill, but fun to build and use!), a couple squads of bikes, some attack bikes, and then a tac squad in Rhino or Drop Pod and a unit of Assault marines or some combination of that. A Master of the Forge with Conversion Beamer on a Jetbike would likely figure prominently into what I wanted to do.
3. Space Wolves: I've honestly never been a big Wolves fan, but the new models really grabbed me and made me eager to play mix n' match with them...there are just so many cool options available. For the Wolves I'd grab on to one of the Great Companies and go, probably not using any named characters. The composition would try to make use of as many units as possible to give me the widest variety of modeling opportunities, but I'd totally skip out on things I thought were stupid, like Thunderwolves. This would mean that some of the sub-par units like Skyclaws might wind up in the list, but I do think that if one looks past how awesome Grey Hunters are, and how easy it is to take a pile of Missile Long Fangs, there is a ton of tactical flexibility in the book.
The last thought would be to simply hold out until the Chaos Legions book comes out and see what kind of options are in place then....if a new Thousand Sons sculpt comes out, I might add them to the list of considerations.
