Newsflash from BNN (Borderland News Network):
Fierce skirmishes and ambushes are reported throughout the Border Princes region as winter snows recede and invading forces make their way through the mountain passes. A regiment of Reiksguard knights was ambushed on the old dwarf road by a massive skaven force. Charging down the narrow mountain valley, the noble knights were decimated by warp lightning cannon fire erupting from the peaks to the left and to the right of them. Valiantly, they rode through the devastating fire and crashed into the waiting block of storm vermin, only to be mercilessly cut down by the elite rat warriors. To the south, a lizardman force protecting the Blood River Bogs marched forth to contain the forces of chaos, laying waste to a Nurgle raiding party in a hard fought battle whose tide was turned by the timely charge of an ancient stegadon that ground the puny warrriors into pulp under its massive feet. Heavily bloodied, the serried saurus pushed onward and sacrificed themselves against a superior host of khorne daemons. Buying time with their lives, they brought down as many of their hated foes as possible, yet refusing to yield an inch of ground until each and every saurus had been slain. Elsewhere, skeletal troops of the tomb kings were raised in a bid to stave off yet more invading warriors of chaos but the slow moving undead proved easy pickings for the elite fighting troops of the northern realms.
As polar gates leaked raw chaos energy, allowing more deamons into the region, Empire strategists were at a loss at how to slow the vast numbers of foes while their own levies were being raised. In a brilliant feat of metallurgical prowess, Balthazar Gelt, supreme wizard of the colleges of magic, was able to turn a vast array of lead coins into gold, a treasure trove which was then used to buy the services of a large force of mercenary ogres. Moving alongside another contingent of reiksguard knights, the ogres split off to the north of the East Blood River to combat a combined force of skaven and warriors. With the extremely rough terrain and unreliable skaven fleeing everywhere to hinder the progress of their warrior allies, the battle proved a rather cautious one as the ogre general sought to preserve his troops while holding the high ground. An ironblaster erupted in a spectacular explosion due to skaven sabotage, drawing the attention of a nearby chimera. Laying hidden in a tower, a unit of leadbelchers waited until the flying monstrosity was at point blank range before unleashing a massive hail of lead that blasted the chimera from the sky in an earth shattering crash. The death of the chimera forced a tactical withdrawal of the warriors while their skaven "allies" tried to regroup.
While the ogres blocked the northern approach to the river, the reiksguard engaged a force of daemons to the south. The fiery oratory of the commanding warrior priest heartened the knights against their daemonic foes, allowing them withstand the charge of slaanesh seekers and continue the advance. To their left, the halberdier horde came under fire of flamers but as several men dropped, others were transformed by the chaotic forces and began regenerating wounds. Signalling a charge, the halberds hit the front of the daemonettes, while the knights made a timely flank charge. In spite of overwhelming force, the daemonettes held fast and were soon supported by their normally despised khorne allies with a crushing flank charge against the halberds. A grinding combat continued for over an hour as daemons, men and horses were hacked to bits. However, the chaotic nature of daemons was their undoing as the slaanesh herald detonated in a huge fireball as a spell went out of control, sucking any nearby troops, friend and foe, down into the void. Exhausted, the knights charged again as the halberds formed ranks against the bloodletters but the mutating forces of chaos worked on both sides and daemon and human wounds were regenerated. All forces were committed as flamers and flesh hounds hit the knights over the front and rear but the knights armour protected them while the priest's battle magic helped turn the tide ever so slightly. Again, chaos erupted and the deamonic instability caused the daemons to phase out. In a final battle, the knights were reinforced by the first of several promised steam tanks from the Nuln engineers as they fought a force of nurgle warriors. Spewing lead and steam, the stank blasted skullcrushers and wardogs while the knights and arch lector engaged chaos ogres. Again, the knight's armour protected them and they were able to drive off the ogres while the nurgle warriors handily beat the halberdiers out of the building they were defending. In a final act of courage and bravado, the exalted champion of nurgle on his palaquin challenged the arch lector to single combat. Accepting, the warrior priest unveiled a small, enchanted mirror that left the nurgle warrior feeling weakened while the priest moved with unheralded speed and strength. Surrounded and outnumbered, the nurgle standard bearer tried to flee but was run down, allowing the knights to join the stank in a final, devastating charge against the nurgle warriors.
Overall, thanks to the heroic efforts by the forces of order, a stronghold in the southeast near the bogs has been established from which Empire, Lizard and mercenary forces can be resupplied. Meanwhile, exploiting the valley of death victory of the skaven, the forces of chaos have created a similar bastion in the Black Fire Pass. The race is on to clear the Black Fire Pass before more chaotic forces arrive but the task will undoubtedly prove bloody as skaven engineers dig defensive positions from which their can command any approaches while the norsemen, unmatched in martial prowess, defend the valley.
