Prior to the match, assess how your list might perform against your opponent's build. Imho, there are two questions one has to be ask when trying to assess a particular matchup:
(1) Is your list inherently equipped to deal with the opponent's list (i.e. hard/soft counters)? (2) How do you use your advantages against your opponent's disadvantages (and avoid the reverse)?
Assess these questions in terms of three further considerations:
(1) Which enemy ships do you want to initially engage with your own? (2) Which flight lanes do you use to fly where you want to go? (3) Where do you place your ships during setup to allow that to happen?
The way to make this easy, of course, is to have set plays already thought out for certain situations. So, for my tournament list, I have three primary set plays that I use to gain an early advantage... and if you can gain an early advantage, like many games, that advantage increases as the game progresses.
In my opinion, the key to performing well in this game is (1) gaining an early game advantage and (2) minimizing mistakes. All in all, flying conservatively and safely is more important than gambling and flying risky, all else being equal, especially when someone is just learning the game.
