Hi all, I just started playing Bolt Action (1 game under my belt so far). I recently met a group who play at Nexus occasionally and I was hoping I could find even more players in the Kingston area to game with.
The other Bolt Action/WW2 gaming threads on here haven't had new posts in a while so I was wondering if there was still interest out there?

Hello. I'm looking to get into it and currently have a Russian infantry platoon in the making. Maybe we could organize a day to get together and play.

There's an active Bolt Action group in Trenton, though probably a bit of a drive to play regularly. thelostforums.com

Thanks for reading and responding.
Stephen; I have plans this weekend but does next Friday night (6 March) work for you? We could meet at Nexus around 6 and play a 1000 point (or less) game. There is a good possibility that some of the other BA players I've met might be there to give us a choice of opponents and help with any rule questions we may have.
I normally have a very flexible schedule so I will probably be available if a different time/date works better for you.
Admiral Agrippa; Trenton is a little far to go for regular gaming but I may be able to make it up occasionally. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

I've been looking at this game - Had no idea there was such massive model support for it! Considering, as I do with so many games, actually picking something up, but I was wondering how the game divides itself up on the table in terms of eras of the war. Are you pretty much good to go with anything or does it break down like Flames of War in to Early/Mid/Late? I'm fairly tempted by a lot of the French stuff, but they obviously bowed out of the war pretty quick in terms of using their own stuff - wouldn't want to sink a bunch of money into an army then find everyone running Tigers and IS-3s that I can't hurt.

That's a great question. Honestly I don't know how well or competitively early war French troops would hold up in the game.
My sense so far is that, while they may struggle, they would not be rendered ineffective. Bolt Action is at heart an infantry game (excepting the Tank War supplement). It's rare that you'd see more than one tank and maybe one other armoured vehicle per side in a game. The technological differences for the infantry between early/late war don't appear very pronounced in the game mechanics.
I know of one other person running an early war Belgian army in the Kingston area. Next time I see him I'll as this question and see what he has experienced.
I believe most players here would be willing to forego their late war toys to play an early war game against you. I know I would as long as you don't mind my late war Germans proxied for blitzkrieg era troops and equipment.
TL;DR: I think you could still compete against most or all armies with an early war French force. You certainly could find players to meet you half way and tailor their lists to compete with you on a similar timeline.
Anyone out there with more experience playing Bolt Action able to better answer this question?

I was tempted to play Belgians honestly out of amusement - interesting that someone else is doing it. I also considered Finns as I played them in Flames of War briefly, but getting at things like the Suoma S-35 as a kit is just awesome.

I have a pile of Bolt Action stuff I've accumulated in the 'future projects' stack. I have a start on painting a US force and have a Russian and German SS army waiting for attention. I have read a lot of the books thoroughly, though, and follow the forums regularly over at Warlord, so have a pretty good grasp on how things fit together.
The basic rulebook forces have a standard force selection across the entire war period. You can pick and choose anything you like. The Army Books have force selection tables from different time periods or battles, that limit what is available. The Theatre Books add some enhanced rules and give scenarios that either specify a particular period force selection or give their own. Ideally, you would play against an Army Book list from a matching time period, but it isn't a necessity.
The French will suffer against late war lists mainly in armour penetration. Options for tanks and AT guns are limited to medium-rated guns (+5 AP) which means to hit a Tiger II, for example, you would need to roll a 6 to beat the front armour of 11+. (But why attack a Tiger II from the front? Or a regular Tiger? Or a Panther? ) A Souma is costed a little cheaper than a Sherman and is roughly equivalent in game terms. They are a third of the point cost of a Tiger II and half and change versus the cost of a regular Tiger.
As mentioned above, infantry doesn't change much across the war and the French have some interesting special units (Tirailleurs and Foreign Legion). The French could certainly make a good list for friendly games against a compatible era army and probably a good competitive list because your armour and other 'big gun' choices are not soaking up near as many points. The French could field more units of a survivable size (no minimum man infantry units just to get an order die) than many late war lists with bigger toys. More order dice in the game means more tactical flexibility.

I am also looking into this game, I would love to capture the Cape Breton Highlanders on the table, and this seems the perfect catalyst for me to do it, I just know nothing about the game itself. I'm more of a history buff to be honest

I'm definitely thinking I'll get in on this as soon as I'm back in Kingston (hopefully for at least a bit in May). Debating on what regiment I should represent, very much looking at the possibility of bringing the Black Watch to life on the table.

I'm heading down to the States for a few weeks but I'd like to see this game in action when I'm back. Want to get a good feel for it before I think about sinking money anywhere.

I should be down to play in a few weeks (probably not painted yet, don't get home until May 10th). Going to start up an RCR platoon at 1000 points. I'll be in asap to play 500 points first though.

So I'm hoping this didn't just get a whole lot of forum support and no one actually wants to play did it? Is anyone willing to play a little bit? I can start next weekend if anyone's up for it.
