Matt and I are heading up for the doubles tourney on the 25th: Brawl in the Hall XIIHoliday Inn Peterborough Waterfront 150 George Street North, Peterborough, Ontario K9J 3G5 Warhammer 40k Event – 2000 points doubles (1000 points per player)– March 25 2017 - $30 pre-reg Warhammer 40k Event – 1850 points singles – March 26th 2017 - $20 pre-reg Full details phantasm.pfga.ca/warhammer.htmlPrizes will be given out by draw, this the number of tickets determined by how well you do and your overall ranking. This year we are introducing a narrative stream for folks who just want to chuck some dice and we are also going to be submitting scores to ITC, so that those who would like to can get some points from this event. (note: you do not need to pay entry to Phantasm to play in this event. You just pay the cost of event. If once the event is done if you want to play in any of our other events, or games, you pay for those separately) We are doing a group order again with Urban Mats. This year we are going to be able to save folks 30% plus the saving on shipping, which is a real plum. I’ve got a couple of these mats myself, really love using them they add a lot to the table. A 6’x4’ mat should end up costing about $100. Orders need to be into me by March 1st 2017. PM me what you want, I’ll pay pal an invoice to you for $100. Once the order is in and the shipping is figured out we just settle up the difference, accounting for conversion to euros and the shared cost of shipping. www.urbanmatz.com/ review www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2zwt_I39cY

So now that I've had some sleep I'll give a brief rundown of the day.
So this was alot smaller event than was anticipated (maybe more are going to be there for the singles today?) and given it was part of a fantasy/gaming convention space was at an absolute premium. Two tables got moved to make room for the expanding convention after game one which really cramped the 40k space. Prize support was all draw prizes, however they did something a little different in that every game you won you got three draw tickets, 2 for a draw and one for a loss. So decidedly not very fair for prize support (talk about kicking a guy when he's down eh?). Prizes were pretty lackluster (some templates, a book, an opened - seriously in a plastic bag - big mek, an incomplete sprue - seriously - of space marine bits, and a stormtalon). Especially for a $30 entry fee, this was quite a bit of a letdown. First, second and third won extra draw tickets (3/2/1 respectively). Also two of the "book mission" games were actually maelstrom. It's a good thing I had my cards already in my bag because there was zero warning of this, and given I have two battlefoam cases it was literally a 50/50 chance I brought the right one because I didn't know to bring it!
Game one:
So we got paired off against Derek and Ben from Trenton! They were running the recent LVO winning list of Fateweaver summoning spam daemons with three disc heralds in a screamer star (as Ben's half of the 1k) and the renegade guard with zombies and a million artillery, wyverns and basilisks (like I think four of each of them?). To say we were outgunned was an understatement. We played the mission, and targeted the biggest threats as best we can. Given over the course of the game Ben summoned two units of horrors, TWO D thirsters, and a exalted flamer chariot (along with all the splitting for extra units) we were in for a rough game as we were literally playing 2k vs. 3k.
We had first turn though and snagged first blood. the renegades have a lot of squishy targets - but we got first blood off the grimoire herald. We decided to pummel the screamerstar with everything we had in order to nuke it before it powered up and try to reduce some of the psychic overload of dice. We got it down to three screamers and two heralds and managed to take out a couple artillery pieces too.
Derek rained down template after template and Matt had to remove models by the handfuls. Fortunately for us we were playing the mission no matter what the consequences and focused on racking up the maelstroms. First summoned D-thirster was killed by destroyers and the rapiers took a toll on the artillery and vehicles (although with an aegis giving them a 4+ save, the tanks were hard to shift).
A couple turning points happened in the game which really hurt us. I had to move destroyers up the field in order to secure linebreaker. I had already moved one unit to one of the middle objectives (with the d-lord) and got swamped by zombies and was trying to fight my way through to secure the objective but couldn't cut my way through in time. So the ones I was going to use for linebreaker scooted up literally one inch too far and were long shot charged by zombies (9" plus cover!) to be bogged down for the game.
My third unit of destroyers managed to fight their way out of some summoned pinks and scooted up the flank to secure linebreaker. The rapiers smoked the basilisk artillery (where the warlord was hiding) making them run off the board and giving us slay the warlord.
A rapier squad had to abandon their gun and charge a wounded d-thirster along with Typhus in order to secure objective 3 as we had to both secure that objective AND kill a FMC on our last turn. They did (although poor typhus died as well since they were unweildy smacking each other). We had to give up warlord, but the artillery crew held objective three and we killed the FMC, so at the end of our last turn we had all three secondaries and were one card up on primary.
So Ben and Derek had to kill a unit and secure objective 2 in order to win primary. A virtual sea of blue horrors moved and ran their way into range for the objective and there was nothing that could have prevented that. The nurgle artillery crew literally soaked every shot they threw at it until there was a single marine sitting there, still soaking a crazy amount of wounds. So we were looking at a draw until the very last shot of Derek's army meant his last armor save, which unfortunately failed! He soaked a LOT of fire though, so we were pretty proud of the stinky little guy.
So we picked up a loss and three secondaries for our first game. But we held up against the cheesiest list imaginable and almost pulled it out, so I'm pretty proud of how we did, even if I was kicking myself about moving those destroyers that one inch too far (but to be fair they just would have been charged by summoned pinks regardless if they held back so I guess it didn't matter beyond a round of shooting lost)

GAME TWO: Vs. Deathwatch + Scions - kill points
Yeah, scions were there. Our opponents were really nice guys but to be totally and 100% fair the outcome of this game was not in double. No transports and expensive T3 guys with a 4+ save and even more expensive marines are pretty much what every gun we had was designed for. Plus the scions all came back on the board on a 5+ meaning an endless supply of easy to kill units. Drawing them on kill points was just even more brutal. We kept things close as we could and helped them get linebreaker at least (as it didn't lower our score to have them get some points) but the end result was pretty much as expected as we lost two kill points during the entire game and we stopped counting for them around 6-7.
Scored all secondaries and a win.
GAME THREE - Tau and Khorne Daemonkin with Cabal - Maelstrom
Another game where we faced a brutal amount of psychic power. The tau was fairly normal CAD with a riptide, pathfinders, breachers, suits, commander and a couple broadsides. The Cabal was that formation of sorcerers who had the power to take a unit (ie: rapiers) and use them to shoot another unit (ie: destroyers) and they all had spell familiars and a crapton of dice so this was happening every turn. They had jump packs and were joined to a khorne dogstar and juggerlord with the axe that turned him into a bloodthirster.
This mission started you with one card and you gained cards each turn ONLY by holding an objective - up to six a turn. We won the roll off for first turn and that dogstar was scouted pretty close. Our opponents however made a crucial deployment error and tried to refuse flank us. In a regular game this is a good tactic as it applies so much pressure to one flank while rendering the other flank useless. In this particular mission it was a terrible idea as it meant they weren't initally drawing any cards beyond the one card they got first turn!
I used the destroyers to jump up the empty flank and pour shots into the dogstar, killing the chaos lord with the rapiers for first blood (along with several dogs) and then the summoned blood thirster that came out of him! We secured early maelstroms first turn by grabbing as many objectives as possible, also upping our chances of more cards next turn.
Our opponents broke off a cabal member who turned himself into a bloodthirster (malefic power) so now we had a D-thirster to deal with! (again the second game of the tourney where we had to face a couple of free bloodthirsters!). Luckily for us the scatter made him mishap and we could place him. We went for the far corner so we could ignore him for a turn at least. They then made the dogstar invisible!
On our second turn we were able to gain three cards, and start to wrack up a bit of a lead. I broke off the D-lord to try and sacrifice himself against an invisible dogstar. At least there were only four dogs and three sorcerers, two of which had axes... how bad could it be? He held out for about three combat rounds - so totally did his job! We pummelled the backfield with rapiers killing the tau and clearing the one objective they held, so they wouldn't get a card at all their second turn.
Our opponents netted themselves a maelstrom (with the one card they had from turn one!) by commanding the rapiers to utterly nuke a unit of destroyers (three S10 AP1 blasts hitting five destroyers at a time will do that when they hit - which of course they did! - even with me going to ground in a forest to try and survive). Matt said he was sorry but I don't think I really believed him. He's just way too happy when rapiers kill things.... even if they're my things! The star continued to fight the D-lord. The sorcerers cast force but luckily couldn't get a wound through.
The game continued with us getting maybe a malestrom or two a turn at most but focusing on denying our opponents the ability to gain cards. The dogstar finally fought it's way out of the d-lord and charged rapiers. We tried to kill the d-thirster but yet again we were in a position where we had a one wound d-thirster ready to charge our lines. The commander and his suit buddies dropped down and nuked the sicaran, but then got charged with zombies and destroyers (the destroyers were to soak up the flamer overwatch which would have killed the zombies - and lasted until the last turn!
this is it Typhus... your time to shine and redeem yourself from your earlier thirster inspired death. Sure they cast invisibility on the frigging thirster.... but you got this buddy... you just gotta believe!
Typhus and the zombies charged the thirster. The zombies did nothing and Typhus got one wound through to the thirster - killing it - while the Thirster did three D wounds to typhus - causing only one wound each time! Typhus Survived!!!!!
The chaos gods rewarded their one wound victorious chaos lord the best way they could. Typhus turned into a chaos spawn on the boon table!!!!
Spawn Typhus and the zombies charged into what was left of the dogstar trying to kill it (it came down to a sorcerer and a dog by the game end) and we ended up winning primary 4 to 1. We scored first blood and warlord (with the commander finally going down at the end) but couldn't net first blood.
So after it was all said and done we scored a perfect sports score, perfect painting, and ended up with second place overall. I'm pretty happy about how we did overall.

Thanks for the write up Shannon!
Accurate but neglecting the fact that the dogstar was based on damn broadside bases. The rapiers should have netted at least twice as many hits as they got... grumble...grumble
I did actually feel bad about the rapiers nuking the destroyers. That dude managed to no scatter all 3 blasts. Just insane...
And Typhus, oh Typhus; you suck again. Hopefully charging units will strike first or he'll at less manage to be able to remember how to use his scythe again...

Glad you guys had fun, but wow, that pretty much sums up why I don't feel any strong interest in traveling to play 40k and why I'm damn thankful for our local scene.

Yeah Jordan. The base eclipsed the dogs that were glued to them. The squad took up about a 12" square on the board once he spread them out.

Yeah Jordan. The base eclipsed the dogs that were glued to them. The squad took up about a 12" square on the board once he spread them out. " Q: What are the official rules regarding specific base sizes for specific models (if any)? A: The rules assume that models are mounted on the base they are supplied with, but it’s entirely fine to mount them on whichever base you think is appropriate. Sometimes, a player may have models in their collection on unusually modelled bases. Some models aren’t supplied with a base at all. In these cases you should always feel free to mount the model on a base of appropriate size if you wish, using models of a similar type as guidance." Page 2,FAQ November 2016 Seems Legit

Ya that seems pretty crazy....like call the T.O crazy. I know they come on the 40mm bases I believe which seems crazy since they can fit on the new 38mm pretty easy.
This is an area Id lovecto see addressed in 8th. Have a base size reflect either W or T. Ei 60mm bases are T5 or have 4-5 wounds etc.
Same with the MC bases, any thing on the 120mm oval is T6 and has 5-8 wounds depending on what goes on with the 8th ed restructure.
