Well if anyone is willing to form a team for the tournament with a newbie, drop me a PM and we can start brainstorming complementary lists.

Looks like a blast! Missed it last year just wondering if this is a competitive or friendly tournament( I mean all tournaments are friendly). Just seeing how strong I should build my list.

given how 8th is pretty balanced right out the gate, I don't think it's really going to matter what you bring - so bring whatever you'd like!
All our tournaments are friendly in the sense of we don't get too hard core about win at all costs... but people tend to bring fairly strong lists to this one, so feel free to bring your A-game!
This and the tournament in February are our "championship" tournies, so are somewhat competitive, although people also tend to bring themed teams as well... luckily 8th edition has made the gulf between competitive and fun lists not so crazy, so everyone can pretty much bring what they like and have a good chance of making the top tables!
as always though, our product prizes are draws...

The question I suggest asking yourself is "if I play someone new/casual, will my list make them have a miserable time?"
I don't by any means want to encourage people to build bad lists or not try to win, but know.that a decent portion of the players will be less than top-level competitors. Obviously 8th is nowhere near as messed up as 7th got, but I still think there's a ton of ways to build a list that's both worthy of the top tables, but also not going to make people roll their eyes.
I also encourage everyone to think to themselves "how will I adjust my game on the table if my opponent's list doesn't measure up?". There's a ton of things that can be done to ensure that both players have a fun and engaging time without sacrificing your ability to get full points for the round.

ie: tabling your opponent is not required to win in any of the scenarios

The question I suggest asking yourself is "if I play someone new/casual, will my list make them have a miserable time?" Speaking as a newbie, I don't mind that much whenever I get wiped. It simply shows that I either need to rethink by strategy and/or list.

I've got an idea I'm going to play around with regarding setting player expectations in a more official manner.
I've long held that the solution to most issues with this game is to engage a bit more with your opponent, and I think there are some good ways to make setting those expectations a standard part of the tournament game process.

Nobody truly wins when someone gets tabled round 1 (well, maybe you do if you're a sadist). I've played the full range of opponents. Is it tough going up against a highly competitive but realistic player? Yes, and I still enjoy myself and learn things. Is it fun or educational to be across the table from that win crazed sadist? No, full stop.
Have I hammered a rookie in to the ground? No. I don't go out of my way to let them win but I work to help them have fun and learn a few worthwhile things from me. That way they keep coming back and developing both as a player and member of the gaming community.
It only takes a few minutes as you are setting up for your round. Simply asking a few questions about your opponent's experience level and what they want to get out of the tournament will inform what you can do to make it a good round for both sides without throwing the round or tabling somebody.
