Experimented a bit with the Destroyers but I am quite happy with how they turned out. Bringers of destruction. Now to start thinking about the color patterns I want for the Overlords.

Well got the plot for color scheme worked out but I have a question for the more experienced painters (since google has failed me). My intent for the Overlord is to create a black cape with green orbs ( something like the setup on this guy). The problem is that black is naturally a very matte color with no contrast (see my destroyer's engine pods) and I'm looking to create a more metallic effect as the cape is a fairly evident part of the model and it is supposed to be metal. My first thought is a mix of Thamar Black+Pig Iron and highlight and/or drybrush the cloak after priming but does anyone know a better paint option? The only other option I see at the moment is painting stain or gloss varnish onto the cape after the matt spray.

That effect on the cloak is achieved with simply washing with Nihilakh Oxide paint (like a nuln oil wash but with this colour - super simple and effective) and it's sold at Nexus... and you'll get enough to do five armies worth in one bottle...lol www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Technical-Nihilakh-OxideBlack just washed with this will give you that effect.

Shannon hit that nail right on the head.

Well cape didn't turn out quite how I expected/wanted but still more definition then just plane black. FrontBackAnd as a bonus the Nihilakh Oxide will be a great blue color for the glow on my Telsa weapons. Since Gauss has the green locked up I figured a different color for the Telsa would be in order.

The difference is that you would need to now go and layer up the black parts again with black so that the Nihilakh Oxide is just in the cracks/edges
small detail brush and a little bit of time and you'll get the effect you're looking for
the oxide does make a cool glow effect.

Well the re-paint worked though I found it was half due to the Thamar Black lending a bit of a shine to the plate surfaces of the cloak as much as the oxide in the corners.

OK now I'm getting into the experimental stuff. Well experimental for me, probably old hat for you guys. Namely edge highlighting+drybrush. This is a work in progress for my Annihilation Barge where I'm trying to do the classic 'tron lines' you see all over Necron vehicles. Test section.I first went over the entire area with Thalmar Black with a drybrush of caliban green covering the two surfaces next to the edge. Next I reinforced the edge with a solid line of caliban green. Finally a thin as possible line of moot green over the caliban to reinforce the 'glow'. Thoughts?

Looks like a good start... that barge is chock full of all kinds of little details, so there's lots of cool opportunities for edge highlighting and different techniques. ie: I'm glad I don't have to paint another one....

Looks like a great start! This is literally the best way to learn. Challenge yourself to try new things; learn from those initial attempts and just refine the process till it’s just another tool in your toolbox.

ie: I'm glad I don't have to paint another one.... The Barge is nothing, it's fairly small as vehicles go and I can copy what I did on one to my other. It's the Stalker and the Ghost Ark that I'm dreading.

The ghost ark isn't bad so long as you didn't glue in all the guys in the middle and paint them separately.
well it's still fairly bad come to think of it.
in my defense though, I stupidly painted mine yellow, so it might not be too bad for you with better colour choices than me!

Good news is when I originally magnetized the Ark I didn't bother putting in the warriors since I considered that far too much effort for too little gain.
That and I learned from the Stalker so the pilot isn't glued in yet meaning I can paint him and the cockpit/control panels without having to do large areas with my tiniest brushes.
