Hello,
I am recently returning to Warhammer after some time away. At this time i am currently building back up my Tyranid army, as my main battle force.
I am at this currently time i am looking to just build my army back up and looking to enjoy a game or two, by December.
If there is any advice that you would like to impart my way, I would be thankful. As it was 6 years since I have rolled the dice.

Tyranids are about to get a new codex in the next 3-4 weeks or so (I've heard Eldar is next, then nids) so any advice is liable to change dramatically in a very short time but thus far playing tyranids in 8th:
- broodlords are a strong HQ choice - cannot be targeted unless closest unit due to character rule - genestealers are the strongest troop choice - carnifex are very cheap point wise, and although are not very survivable against high strength, multiple damage weaponry they're cheap enough to have this not matter much. Double scything talons and thresher scythe is the build I prefer. - hive tyrants took a significant hit in 8th edition (probably due to them being the only viable model in 6th-7th) to the point where if you're just building a force up, unless a codex changes things I can't really recommend them. - The swarmlord is a beast. His ability to move a unit (ie: genestealers) instead of shooting is great - he can even do it to himself! People rightly fear him hitting combat however, and he will eat a LOT of opposing fire. - Hive guard are very solid right now. Impaler cannons seem to be the stronger gun choice for them. - swarm tactics (lots and lots of gaunts) is pretty strong right now so long as you can keep everything in synapse for immunity to morale. - The big Monstrous Creatures, although I love them and they're my primary build - just aren't very strong for the points as they're so expensive now (except carnifex) that losing one to two lascannon shots really hurts. - malanthropes are amazing. But forge world so not easy/cheap to acquire outside of recasts - lictors and malceptors are pretty hot garbage right now. Too bad because both could be super cool. Thanks GW
Anything specific you're considering I'll offer whatever advice I can!

Thanks for the reply, and I love me a good bug battle.
I do have a broodlord coming, as well as some genestealers. just trying to figure out a list right now.
And that sucks about the lictors cause i did kinda enjoy their models.
And when I did play i usually only ever faced space marines or orks. so i will be nice to play against different models.

I was in there last night, and there was a game going on. i was looking to grab a couple models but the nids seemed to be picked clean. But the next saturday i am off i will have to swing on in. hmmmm... there were stuff in the nid section when I was there on Saturday... maybe someone had a shopping spree?
also - spoiler alert - in the middle section of discount stuff, near the bottom there is a green bin with bagged used items. When I was there on the weekend a whole bunch of tyranid stuff JUST got traded in and put in the sale bins - I saw genestealers in there, a hive tyrant, termagants and hormagants and warriors.
good way to get some discounts!
...of course now that I've said this, other people might be thinking of grabbing the same things... so RUN TO NEXUS QUICK!!!!!

until they get a new book, sadly they're not in a very great spot. Their signature is cult ambush - basically getting to pop up and control the board, charging things with very glass cannon style troops (T3 5+ save dies FAST)... that used to work really good last edition, however with the changes to reserves and some pretty strange changes to the units (metamorphs for example) and point jumps all over the place it's really hard to make a decent list where you cannot find something in the tyranid book that is just flat out better at the same job. Cult genestealers for example - GW changed the point cost on them three times already (upwards of +/- 5 points a model in some cases). Tyranid genestealers are still far superior, especially with supports like swarmlord, tyrannocyte or a trygon as a delivery mechanism.
I have a fairly massive infantry based GSC army that just sits in the case as I have no idea how to make it functional.... which I just finished building a month before 8th hit. (and at $50 for five infantry dudes, I don't even like to think about how much this cost me) I have one possible list in place and once I get less salty about the whole thing I'll probably start refining it.... lol
There is a list that uses Astra Militarium, Genestealer Cult and Tyranids together as due to the FAQ that is possible, however what people have been finding is just going flat out astra militarium (guard) is just better in all respects to the combo.
