Hello everyone,
My name is Greg and I have been living in South Korea for the last 8 years but am moving to Kingston at the end of September. In Korea 40k is super rare, there is one Warhammer store in the entire country no joke, so instead of playing I have been watching a lot of batreps and have focused more on making my painting better. Moving back to Canada however makes me want to get back into 40k in a huge way. I will be starting a Tau army when I arrive and hope to meet all the local people and play some games. I look forward to getting some games in at the local FLGS.
Greg

Welcome Greg!
you're in luck, Kingston has a HUGE 40k community, and one of the friendliest communities around for casual games and tournies and home to some really amazing painters. It's a great place to start with the game.
Feel free to post up lists and ask questions - there's some really good tau players here locally that I'm sure would be happy to help!

Welcome to the party - I much prefer getting tabled by Tau than Eldar, so much more sporting of an experience.
I was in a similar boat for a while - I was living in France during my undergrad and while there are plenty of GW's, they were all quite out of the way for me so I did what you did - worked on my painting, tried to stay connected in some way, and then jumped on the Heresy train in a big way when I moved back to Canada.
I'll echo the above, the local community is huge - every weekend I seem to meet another 2-6 people I hadn't met before (still struggling with names, I must admit), and it's a pretty good balance of fun and competitive that never strays too far into pounding one another into dust, nor losing structure entirely.

Thanks guys!
When I get back to Kingston I`ll be able to just walk around and meet up with people until I get some paint on my models. I`d like to eventually get super competitive and try to make a break for LVO and things like that but that is a few years from now after a lot of hard work.
What is the local gaming scene like?
Do people play at stores or do they have gaming clubs? In Korea most people play at a gaming club. A person rents out a small room in a business building somewhere and then sets up gaming tables and some snacks. Then people pay money either a one time or a monthly fee to play on the tables.
What stores are in Kingston that sell 40k? I don`t think there is a GW store, the closest would be Ottawa or Oshawa, but how many places sell 40k? Do people play in stores a lot?

Hello,
My name is Jason. as for as couple of the questions you have.
Do people play at stores or do they have gaming clubs? lots of people play at the store here in town called nexus. it has lots of room set up for 40k and other table top games.
there is no gw store here in kinston, but you can get what ever at nexus or have the owner mike order it for you if need be. some people do play out of their houses, either people who have room, cant make it often, or live further away. or all of the above.
I also play tau, (not one of the good players mentioned before tho) lol. but i do have a couple other armies.

Kingston Gaming Nexus actually has more table space and more stock than a GW store. Saturdays are 40k days (although the tables are there for use any day) and the table space is free (with the exception of tournies which have a cost to cover prizes), one of the many reasons as a community we really support our local gaming store, given how great he is to the community! For our tag team tournament in September there's 56 people signed up, to give you a sense of how big the store is We are also not known for "super competitive" here. As in if you wanted that style of game you would probably have to specifically ask someone to play that way. Out of our 5-6 tournies a year, at least half are very friendly, and those LVO style lists aren't there at all (or to be honest, even allowed - the tourney structure restricts it). There are other "super competitive" communities close to here (ottawa, toronto) that do that whole scene with ITC points etc. We just don't do that here... we do have a few tournies a year that cater to that more competitive style of play as well though if you're into that sort of thing.

Welcome!
The Team Tournament and the Club Championships are the "gloves off" kind of tournies where most people dial it up a few extra notches. THankfully though, netlists don't come to the club champs because each mission is unique and you'll only play 6 in the weekend; so netlists tend to fail really hard the few times we've seen them come.
BUT! Not only is it gloves off for list building it's also THE painting event of the year; and in the past few years we've been seeing a dramatic rise in really beautifully converted and painted armies as everyone is pushing each other to take that extra step that maybe we wouldn't have without the community we've got. Couple that with sportsmanship being a large component to your overall score and it makes for a challenging but really, really fun time.

That sounds amazing!
I~m not a big fan of netlists myself as well but I would like to try to get into some competitive tournaments. This is obviously a long way away as first I need models, paint, an army list, practice, experience etc.... I`m a long, long way away from running with the big dogs.
