Hi Everyone, I just read an interesting blog post from the founder and CEO of Shapeways in which they state that their prices will be increasing in the new year to cover adjusted material and finishing prices.
Long story short, if you were on the fence about ordering anything from Shapeways, do it before Jan 1st 2019 or you'll likely end up paying an undisclosed percentage more for the same item.
Thought I'd let everyone know.
Regards, Matt

yah, I severely misjudged how expensive my flippin icons would be... Never thought I'd see the day where I wished I could still get Forgeworld icon sheets at the bargain price of 16 GBP.

"hey, we're not making that much money as people aren't buying our expensive stuff, what should we do?"
"increase prices?"
"sounds like good business sense to me! it's not like people can 3D print at home... they'll need us forever!"

On one hand yes; you hit the nail on the head Shannon; on the other... I can't print in steel or platinum at home, so from a jewelers perspective they still have a very defined need there.
If I spent any time at all, I may be able to get my printer set up so I can do my own 40k minis. Maybe after champs...

An update came out for this developing story today.
"As we have recently shared in our Letter from the CEO, in order to focus on R&D and invest in developing new technologies and services, Shapeways has also been evaluating parts of our business model that are not profitable, sustainable, or competitive and require change. This includes price, which will be changing on October 22.
For existing shops and public models currently on the Shapeways marketplace, we have grandfathered prices and manufacturing shipping speeds until 2019.
While we are trying to minimize disruption prior to the holiday season and respect our legacy stores on the marketplace, this good intent does add some complexity. The pricing will therefore differ if you are ordering models directly in the creator flow or uploading new ones/making them public on your shop after October 22.
We are providing even more detail to help in the transition below.
How will it affect me as a Shop Owner?
Prices for public models currently on the Shapeways marketplace will be grandfathered into their existing pricing until 2019. New models or existing models made public or own model orders on Oct 22, 2018 and going forward, will be subject to the new pricing changes.
What happens to new models uploaded to my shop or existing ones made public after October 22?
They will receive the new pricing and ship-by dates: differentiated by economy (longer lead times) and priority. Economy is the default pricing and shoppers will have the option to opt in to faster receipt at a higher price.
What happens if I have a mix of grandfathered models and new ones added on or after October 22?
Order ship date is governed by the longest lead time of any model in that order (consistent with how it is today). The manufacturing speed selection applies to an entire order.
If all items in your cart are grandfathered, the economy manufacturing speed won’t appear as an option, because it is defaulting to priority at no extra charge.
If an order contains a mix of models (eg. a mix of new and grandfathered, user’s own models), it defaults to the economy manufacturing speed with priority available in the cart (at a higher price).
How does this affect my markup?
The pricing change on October 22 does not affect the markup. Shop Owners set their own markups.
Can you remind me what is changing in the new pricing? Can you provide any more detail?
Manufacturing Speed – Historically we have not differentiated prioritization in our manufacturing process, giving every part the same priority of production. With the new model pricing we are offering varied manufacturing priority, starting with Priority and Economy options. The Priority offering will prioritize parts and ensure delivery within our current standard manufacturing time, while Economy will not be prioritized and will be manufactured when capacity is available allowing for a low-cost option for parts that don’t require a specific delivery time frame. Please note: we will still be providing ranges for delivery dates.
Date and price shown in the upload flow and in the cart reflect the Economy manufacturing speed, which is the default.
Economy manufacturing is available for the price you see at model upload and offers a lead time approximately 10 business days longer than Priority manufacturing.
Priority manufacturing selection happens in the cart and the price change will only be reflected in the cart / added to the model cost shown in the cart.
Order shipping date is governed by the longest lead time of any model in that order, regardless of manufacturing speed selection.
Minimum Pricing – We have added minimum prices per part. Small parts require similar labor, processing, and handling as large parts and we need to adjust price to offset those costs.
Finish Pricing – Versatile Plastic will now have charges for finishes and colors to align with the real cost structure for us to do them.
Material Pricing – We have increased pricing on Cast Metals, Steels, and Sandstone to align with the cost increases we have received from our vendors. These increases vary per material.
Algorithm Change – The intent of the new algorithm is to recreate our existing model, in a more simple way to enable less processing and faster price generation. With this change, there are some differences. Aside from the changes noted above, we have worked to minimize the variability between the old and new model, resulting in an average price variance of less than +/- 5% change for the economy option.
When is this rolling out?
We will implement the new pricing on October 22, 2018"
