They'll never just off and axe the oldmarine line in one fell swoop. It'll be years - like the phasing out of the variant IG regiment lines. They'll be there, they'll have support mechanically, but they'll just get further and further sidelined.
I expect most of the CA buffs for Marines to target the Primaris range as part of that process.

And next, we'll check in with Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos, for his take on this development;

It isn't you need to take XYZ units but you can apply the formation to a specific detachment and they cost CP. The first example they give is one that costs the 5CP you normally get from a Battalion and units with specific keywords gain buffs/special abilities:
However it's noted that these formations are designed for matched play as well. Hopefully all the factions will get a formation to play with instead of just the ones mentioned.

I mean as long as the formation bonuses arent as broken as the 7e ones I'm okay with it. But my knee jerk reaction is to hate it due to flashbacks from bundle formations that absolutely dominated games.

spending CP to use them at all might tone down the CP use throughout game I guess.
maybe they're going to balance them this time?
....lol... just kidding, they're re-introducing the thing that broke last edition and expecting different results....

I mean AOS does have "formation" style builds that gain a bonus. I am no expert here but I think the Beast Claw Raiders "formation" is 120 pts just to get the formation, then you pay for the models.
If they go more that route I think they could make it work. I mean if you have to pay 10-15% of a army just to gain access to the formations it might help keep it in check. That was the main issue with 7th was there was no tax so you could just bring the good stuff with no down sides.
Also yes if it cost CP to get a formation or trigger its bonus it might be do-able.

I mean the example given was that it cost 5 CP to use, that is not an insignificant investment. Assuming you only can bring one battalion (and maybe an outrider etc) that leaves you at just four CP to use for the entire battle. That is a massive shift in how you fight.
I mean currently there are a ton of one/two CP strats that we nearly constantly use in fights. Like my 'crons with 1 CP to advance and charge in the first turn, 2 CP to regen wraiths in the second/third and another to keep the T.Vault at full capability for a turn (this nearly constantly depending on how much firepower is directed at it).
If formations end up cutting a third/half of our CP in exchange for (potentially) game-long bonuses/buffs, they'll probably cause a big shift in how we build our armies.
