I don't know if its cause I haven't played many games this year or what. But i miss old fantasy, which sent me down a rabbit hole and I am now looking through my old white dwarfs from 6th ed, (almost 20 years old) and missing the good old days. So I did what anyone would do and starting building a fun project of a daemon army for 6th.
I doubt I would ever get any games in, but I've just enjoyed building the army up and converting models that don't have models such as changebringers (flamers riding Discs of Tzeentch). One great thing though is many models that weren't out or were but just in metal are mainly out in plastic for some ranges. Armies like brettonia and Tomb kings would be much harder to build these days.
I'll probably start a painting blog once I get started painting my models shortly, just building up models and ordering some good old square bases now. My goal of the army is mainly to be able to run it in both 6th and 8th. I still have my old 8th list just due to the fact I have a picture of it all painted up back in the day.
Anyone miss the old rank and flank game and excited for the old world to return? I have no idea what they are going to do for factions outside the kislev army that they have been "previewing". Also if you do miss the old Warhammer, definitely check out The old world lives podcast. They play 6th and go through lore of different factions and go into depth of units and such, something i wish was around back in the early 2000s.

6th was fun for sure... it's too bad 8th happened... it basically killed our local community... 7th was fun as well but the tail end where daemons and vampire counts came out super broken (thanks Matt Ward!) tipped the balance and things just got more broken from there! (the days of "gold swords" - 10 models for $70 that needed to be in a unit of 30+ to be effective!)

I wish I had been able to start back in the days of Fantasy. I've heard nothing but good things of its golden days. I'm really hoping that this "The Old World" game turns out well, and has non-human armies. Then again, I've seen some rumours stating it'll be forgeworld exclusive, just like the horus heresy game. That would suck.

(the days of "gold swords" - 10 models for $70 that needed to be in a unit of 30+ to be effective!) 8th was broken with two rules, steadfast and hordes. It made units need to be 30+ in size at a minimum which made the game crazy expensive to buy into, i wanted to play beastmen for a time cause i loved the bestigor sculpts but i couldnt do 2 units of 40 gors. I didn't want to be like 300$ for like 250 points of models. I didn't play much of 7th, did play mainly the beginning but stopped for most of it. Ive heard Vampires ruled the magic phase and daemons were just too strong. 6th was just fun. Rulebook was confusing but GW had a different motto. They still made fun army lists that made you convert the entire range like Vampire coast pirates and the Gnoblar army. They had loads of characters and fun units you could use in games and most army books had different ways to play your factions. Vampires had the bloodlines plus if you wanted to run there fancy bloodline lists in the back of the book that had things like heroes from other factions for Lahiam vampires and Lizardmen had the south coast skink lists which had rules for older models no longer in the range. 6th also had the bonus of needing a lot less models. 20 man squads for the most part unless you ran goblins. Skeletons didnt need too many as you were summoning them in the game. The old world is definitely a Forge world thing and I have no issues with it being one. I loved the Horus heresy and still have an alpha legion army from it. It was actually cheaper to play I found since they came out with plastic boxsets like betrayal of Calth and Burning of Prospero. I expect the main rules to be a 100$+ book but I may not buy their minis straight from FW as that'll definitely be expensive. There's talk of it just being humans and ill just use other models i have if need be.

I'm sure the 6th edition rulebook / army books are floating around the interwebs somewhere. Was definitely the most fun edition of WHFB that I remember (well that and early 7th before the two broken books were released)
biggest problem was that in that time period GW was releasing only a handful of army books per edition so sometimes armies were very, very far behind - for example bretonnians I don't believe got an army book after 5th edition or something crazy like that.

I loved 6th. It's where I got into WHFB. I still have the Dark Shadows campaign booklet and the Dark Emissary model. I think the campaign where Cult of Slaanesh was introduced was at the start of 7th? I never looked back to another god from then on.
Bretonnians did get a book in 6th... at the end, but never again.

ah yes you're right... brets got their last army book in the game in 6th edition.
was definitely the most fun edition I remember of the game (but that's when I started playing so maybe it's the nostalgia factor)

Hey just wanted to pop in and say WHFB is still alive and well through 9th Age. www.the-ninth-age.com/ Myself and about 8 other guys play in belleville. I'm Kingston local so if anyone wanted to get the rank and file back on the table check out 9th Age and I would happily get my Orcs and Goblins on the table.
