So, a bit late to provide the news, but the Immortal Empires beta is here. It allows you to play across the huge combined map, and use all factions and dlc that you own across the three games. You need to own all three games to use it though.
Keep in mind that it is still in beta right now, so some bugs and glitches are to be expected.

I just got a new computer, and bought #2 on sale and started playing high elves. Do you think I should play immortal empires instead?

For immortal empires, you need to own all 3 base games. If you own all 3, then I don't see why not. Unless you really like the "Eye of the Vortex" campaign or something.

I still play games with the old maps on occasion. Usually to grab achievements. I never really loved the vortex campaign, but it's not terrible. Wouldn't be a bad thing to run through it once for the experience. Definitely forces a different style of play, since you have to keep armies at home to deal with ai spawns during a ritual.
IE runs pretty great for me so far. I've had a crash, but I get those in total warhammer 3's campaign on occasion too. Turn times are quite fast despite having well over 200 factions on the map at the start of the game. Huge map is pretty cool, and I like how they shook up so many of the starting positions.
I'll still probably start up campaigns on the base TW3 map in future though. I got the legendary achievement with khorne, but I ignored the daemon souls, and went for a domination victory. Game is much better now that you can block portals from spawning in a province, so I'd play it again to check out the story.
