So up on the You tubes, Adam Savage has a 4-5 part series where he walks thru the design / 3d printing / building /wiring/ painting and ultimately shooting a cinematic video in front of not blue screen,but LCD WALLS of rendered background, to make something super neat.

fascinating stuff if your interested. I will say his approach to painting and weathering is completely different to how I would have approached it. ots a lot to watch, but I seriously recommend it.
