Potential Word Bearer player seeking teacher(s)

Hello! Iv been lurking around nexus and this forum for many a year and recently Iv been interested in getting into gaming again, but like for real this time 😝 (I played a little AOS with my Blightkings back pre Covid days, but honestly 40k is more my flavour I’ve come to learn)

however the issue is as follows: I have a slight learning disability, & I am looking for a teacher who is willing to do some sort of “escalation” style campaign with me as I build my Chaos word bearers army over the remainder of this year, someone who will no get too impatient with a slow learner lol. (It’s takes me a hot second to add up dice.. I’m not great with math😔)

At the end of the month I plan on getting a box of 20 mkiv marines and a box of 10 Tartaros terminators (I love the short-chonky look of them lol) I figure that will be good for marines forever lol
and also be a good amount to play some low level points games?
Then eventually onto purchasing a rhino or dreadnought.

(eventually I even wanna get Argel Tal and run him as a daemon prince and the Gal Vorbak as possessed CSM)

essentially I’m making a “Word Bearer” themed chaos space marine army for 40k, using mostly Horus heresy minis as proxy’s  

But I need help to learn.. and not on gaming nights where hard working folk who use their valuable time once a week to get together & game, only to end up saddled with “the new guy who don’t know how to play” lol that’s not cool or fair imo & I know I’d be frustrated too! 🤣

SO! if your willing to teach me one on one, once or twice a month, I’d be happy to learn! I can host if need be as well. Tho I have no game mats or terrain stuff 😬

So re-cap: currently I don’t have anything, I’m waiting till April 1st to order my 20 marines & 10 Tartaros, so until then all I can do learning wise is hear suggestions on what to buy next for my army and stuff like that!


(I realize a copy of the rule book should really be my first purchase but I’d much rather play a few BASIC games with miniatures I would be collecting and painting ANYWAY before deciding if I wanna buy the rulebook and codex and cards and all that jazz if that makes sense)

Welcome to the hobby! I wouldn't suggest buying the rulebook to be honest - a lot has changed since the start of the edition. Speaking of the start of the edition - that's when I started playing Warhammer and everyone has been amazing. I'm still learning so I wouldn't suggest being a teacher figure yet.

Have you tried watching some battle reports on YouTube to get a bit of the basics down in addition to hands on experience? I can recommend a few with different viewpoints on how they run the channel.

No need to worry about the rulebook to be honest at this point in your journey. Better to get a small force together to practice how to play to see if you're into it!

Wahapedia is a great resource for pretty much all 10th edition rules.

Tabletop Battles app (free) is good for tracking games until you want to jump into getting a mission deck.

Whenever you've got a small force and want to learn to play, I'd gladly run you through some practice games to get you up to speed. Nexus is my preferred teaching location though as it's already got tables, lots of space, matts and terrain right there and it's close to where I live.

Sounds like the theme of your force is going to be pretty cool, especially if you're sourcing specific units. I'm a sucker for a well done theme lol.

You can download the Core Rules for free from the Warhammer Community site. I still printed mine out, but its a good way to get started.

You can also download the Chaos Space Marines Index from the same site. The Codex will be out soon, but the Index would get you started. Just print out the datasheets that you need. Battle Scribe is a free list-building app as well.

Jack Shrapnel would likely be your best tutor, but I would also be happy to play some learning games. While you are collecting and building we could do an intro game where you use a 500 point CSM army using my 30K Dark Angels models as stand-ins (oh the heresy!!!). I have Tartaros models etc so you could get a feel.

Don't worry about Secondaries and such things just yet if you are looking at battle reports on Youtube. One step at a time!

Another good idea could be to come down on Saturdays and watch games being played. I know that Dave has Chaos Marines he brings out from time to time, and there's a few other folks in the community that have them as well. Watching how they play to figure out your playstyle.

Terminators are a solid lock for a really cool looking unit that typically has a space in a list in most edition; and marine bodies, are marine bodies; they're a bread and bottle unit that you'll always need in some form or another.

hi there. I'm a fellow chaos player, and by that I mean chaos space marines. Ive been collecting for a few years now (wild) and honestly most of my army composition / building and collecting decisions have been mostly based on rule of cool rofl. So while I may not be the best for strategy, I do however have a good grasp of the rules. I don't get to play all that often but I try and get down to play at the nexus once a month or so on Saturdays, so perhaps the warp trails will align and we will meet in the meterium plane.

Welcome to the Long War! I play chaos space marines (and orks) and as mentioned we are getting a new codex soon. My suggestion is don't chase the top units right now as things could change. Collect what you really like right now and if don't have anything yet I would wait for upcoming battle boxes as they offer good value. Additionally new codex may have detachment options that might work with Word Bearer lore (dark apostle/cultists). As you mentioned Horus Heresy stuff can be used or proxed for some flavour. Some things are legends so be selective. I love this idea too- I have a Leviathan dreadnought that is now legends but that won't matter among friends and fluffy games.
