Hey folks, being a HUGE Titanfall fan, I was a little disappointing to learn that what Respawn had been developing over the last couple years was NOT Titanfall III. Instead, they dropped Apex Legends on Monday, completely out of the blue, with no hype leading up to it, a bit of a shock.
I was prepared to hate this game. Locked and loaded with complaints I'd read online. Battle Royal style, Published by EA (can you say loot boxes?), no advanced movement (slide-hopping, wallrunning), No Titans, Free-to-play. All negatives in my book.
Or so I thought.
Since it was free, and I had a couple people on my friends list playing, I thought what the hell, I'll download it.
Let me tell you folks, I had a blast. The gameplay was crazy tight, the upgrade path is super sweet, the call-out system is great, servers were running at peak efficiency, with over 1.5 million unique players on launch day. One of the least buggy games I've played at launch in over 5 years.
What's more, it felt more like a cooperative, squad based survival shooter than a Battle Royal game. Calling out to your squad where upgrades are, pinging enemy location, coming up with flanking routes, sharing loot between players, all this and more contributed to the teamwork element.
The mechanics are quick to pick up, and they introduce the idea of a class system, giving flavorful, but not game-breaking perks depending on who you pick before the mission. There are 8 classes, and only one can be present in a squad at a time, meaning there is no double dipping on certain perks. All this helps balance out the gameplay.
All of the stuff you actually pay money for is cosmetic, nothing that actually affects gameplay, so there is no Pay to Win element either.
So, give it a shot. If you wanna team up on Xbox, shoot me a message.
Hey, If Angry Joe isn't angry about a game, it has to be at least a little decent!
