so im starting a Vamps army soon i dont know anything about them so whats are the good units to use? Greetings, Well good for you, mate. I have wanted to do a Vampire Counts army for quite some time now. I think from when the previous army book for them came out, maybe before that. They are such a sweet army. They just have to so much character in them...so much fun history to read, a incredible bestiary (the fluffy stuff) and the models look great. The only reason I have not done them is that the models are often very small. Not like Adeptus Astartes, then. There is one major question you need to ask yourself when deciding what units to use: "Do I want to win tournaments with this or am I just building the army purely to goof off and have fun and I could care less if I never win any tournaments with it". Most of the stuff is good. Some units are not so hot though, like Zombies, the ethereal swarms, bat swarms, dire wolves and Black Coaches. Other units are amazing, like Black Knights, Blood Knights, Grave Guard, Ghouls, Varghulves and Wraiths. It also depends, are you trying to make a balanced army? Or an infantry army? Or a very fast moving army? Probably the best thing you can do is get a lot of these boxes: 1) Empire Knightly Orders 2) Chaos Knights 3) Vampire Counts Battalion box 4) Empire Greatswords The Greatswords work well for Wraiths, the Chaos Knights are awesome as Blood Knights, the Empire Knights are great as Black Knights and the battalion box is just superb (Zombies may be lame, but they are fun!). Plus, then the whole army is plastic which is just wildly awesome. Hmm well I hope you found some of this helpful :-). Courage and Honour

zombies can be good, but I never pay for them as you can just create new units with the level one spell and there's no limit on how big you can make them.... I like to make a new unit 12" away from my caster, then vanhel's dance them 8" to threaten war machines. There's only a couple units in the vamps that are arguably not very good... and really the only ones I never use are bat swarms.... And I'll disagree with Cassidy on a few items there... dire wolves have an incredibly fast move and are very cheap - 40 points to attack a warmachine or stuff the movement of a nasty unit - well worth it.... the ethereal swarms can be useful at times due to the fact that some units cannot hurt them - however I usually just summon them using winds of undeath (free units are awesome!) and black coaches are just too good not to use... nearly every list I make has them... in 8th edition ALL dice are counted as pool... therefore the black coach can be completely powered up in a couple turns... flying, ethereal, hatred, scythed wheeled, killing blow chariot that continues to eat magic dice? ? yes please.... Blood knights are good, but very pricey point wise and money wise... chaos knights can easily be converted for 1/4 the cost! ...oh and you can re-grow every unit....

Jack is definitely right, if you use the Chaos Knights for Blood Knights (and Empire Knights for Black Knights) you save a lot. Blood Knights: $25 for 5, or $90 for five Black Knights: $35 for 8, or $120 for eight Some of the things that Shrapnel said about those other units are really good points too. Dire Wolves are cheap money wise and they are plastic as well, so they really have that going for them :-). Hopefully I will see you at a tournament soon and our armies can have a nice battle! maybe it would be a good idea then to play a few games against the vamps so that you see how and what the army can do. are you able to come out regularily on thursday evenings?

if you'd like I can bring out my vamp army this Thursday so you can see how they play...
you really need the army book though... vamps are somewhat tricky with list creation as compared to some other armies because you have to include things such as powers in addition to items, and you have to make sure you have sufficient coverage of your army with vampires or else you won't be able to march etc.
the magic phase is crucial to vamps as well... even if you don't play a magic heavy force you still need to use magic to raise your troops...
