So, June 11th and 12th is astronomi-con (http://www.astronomi-con.com/), a 2 day 6 game tournament for 1500. I went last year with my brother and we both had a blast, and will be going again this year. It's one of the biggest tournaments around, last year there was 80 people there. It's about as far away from 'ard boyz as you can get, with each table having its own scenario and only 78 out of 200 points being for game play, so you see a lot more balanced lists and have a fun time. It's really well done, the organizers have a lot of experience. They allow you to play non standard stuff, such as forge world and imperial armour so long as you have it approved by them before hand, I fought against a guy with 3 thunderbolts last year. The only real kicker about it is the entrance fee, $95.

Way too close to my wife's due date to think of going, though I'd like to one year.

Been checking this out online at: www.astronomi-con.com/and talking to some of the tourney organizers... they've certainly got an interesting perspective on things, and sound like a bunch of good guys... Sounds like a real good time... Tommy and I are signing up to go....

Well we're back from Astro!!!! I'll try to put up some detailed battle reports as I finish uploading pics (and recover!)... got in late last night... two solid days of 40k plus travelling kinda did me in! The quick and dirty rundown: ME: 3 wins (vs. Tau, Salamander Marines, Imperial Guard) 2 draws (vs. Orks, witch hunters) 1 loss (vs. Chaos - double lash prince/3x oblits/termies/plague marines) TOMMY: 4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss (vs. the same Chaos player!) The Chaos player went on to win best general... and apologized at the end for the list he brought - very WAAC, crushed everyone he faced... but interestingly enough... at Astro one of the smallest trophies is for best general.... around par in size with the "best army list" trophy... this is certainly a different type of tourney! There were 3 trophies which involved presentation, and there were some absolutely breathtaking armies... and a completely transparent scoring system... there was a checklist where the organizers throughout the tourney graded your army, then they gave you back the checklist, which told you exactly what you got and why!... there were three guys running this tourney and there were 60 armies present... the guy who won the appearance did entirely NMM on his army... and there were LED's built into his display... it was just wow.... The custom wraithlord that one best single miniature was likewise incredible... The scenarios and tables were part of what made the day... so you've got 30 tables set up, each with a DIFFERENT scenario that was miles apart from anything in the book... in fact there was only two tables that included kill points.... one of which was pretty amazing that I got to play: It involved a Baneblade, which slowly moved across the board, shooting each of it's guns in turn at whatever was closest... the Baneblade was able to acquire kill points too... each of it's three structure points was worth one kill point, and your goal to win was to acquire more kill points than your opponent and the Baneblade.... if you ignored the Baneblade, it dropped S10 ten inch templates around the board... great mission... (and one of my wins!) Another great one that I got to play was the Temple of Doom... an inquisitor (in terminator armor) was with a retinue of 10 henchmen in the centre, surrounded by a force field that was powered by AV 14 pylons. The forcefield gave you D6 S9 AP2 hits if you crossed it... and behind the forcefield everyone got a 3+ cover save! the inquisitor and his retinue attacked the nearest enemy at the start of every turn... and you had one of four randomly selected (drew a card) objectives that you kept hidden from your opponent - if you revealed them you got in-game bonuses... if you kept them hidden you got two extra battle points! Mine was kill the inquisitor.... my opponent was assassinate my HQ! - I played against one of the other sisters players and drew - I had the Inquisitor down to 1 wound with 1 henchman left - he couldn't get my HQ....

Best....tourney....ever....
just saying....
I've never played more enjoyable 40k.... great bunch of guys.... door prizes were things like $150 gift cards for GW's online store... Tau battleforce... dreadknight....
the prizes were ALL done as door prizes... the winners got trophies only.....
very, very different.... the WAAC lists were really frowned upon.... (like I said, the double lash guy even apologized to everyone while he got his award!)... focus was on sportsmanship, painting, themes... etc....
the guy that won best army list did a CODEX.... yep... a codex printed and bound as his army list, with codex entries, pictures and backstory for all his units and characters.

Hmmm writing your own codex? I'm surprised a White GW van didn't pull up in front full of masked Redshirts that jumped out and grabbed him the whole time screaming "Copyright Infringement" ;D Glad you had a good time. I really don't know if I could do 2 days of Warhammer. One full day is usually enough for me. Glad you guys did well. Guess we'll be seeing the Sisters more often now

Great job guys, glad you had fun! I might have to think about doing this one next year if I can get my Word Bearers up and painted to a degree I like.

Was an incredibly fun tourney....
the double lash list was pretty brutal, and there really wasn't much I could do (drop oblits by exorcists, blow them up, blow up transports, double lash to assault with princes, rinse and repeat)
but other than that every game was close, every scenario was completely different and entertaining to the point that we were looking forward to playing them....
Tommy and I really wanted to play "grot mart" but we never got to.... you have to run around the board getting objectives to bring back to zippy the cowboy grot to offer them up for sale... oh and zippy is unkillable and every turn moves randomly and shoots things with his pistols

Glad you guys enjoyed it and I hope to see more of you folks from Kingston out next year. I had a lot of fun with my Eldar, the Orkz should be all ready to go for next year to change it up. If you want to see how you did overall, they usually post a breakdown of everyone's score on the website a bit after the event(it's on there yet).
