Iv been thinking of getting into MTG again, but I’m not sure where to begin, or anything really. My whole experience with the game was back in public school when I played with friends, and I’m pretty sure even then we were not playing correctly.
If anyone has any suggestions, or information a practically new person interested in the hobby should know I’d greatly appreciate it.
also like, I don’t make a ton of money and Iv heard you have to pay to participate in game nights? Is this true? I hope I’m just misunderstanding something :-O
preferably I like to just mess around and play make themed decks like I used to, meet new people and get outta the house more

I'm not sure exactly how the Thursday night game night works at Nexus, as I haven't played MTG in many years, but I know they're some pretty economical booster draft style events that aren't that pricey that Nexus has on occasion.
I know to play competitively it's pretty pricey though... like makes warhammer seem cheap...lol

I don’t remeber having to pay any money to play Age of Sigmar? Maybe mtg isint for me I just wanted to make a few themed decks (like an all black rat and skeleton deck or something cool like that) and play and meet people... I’m not down for paying to play a game. Especially if I’m already buying my cards from that store.

the 5$ is to put into a pool for the winner to take home, or gets store credit etc. It's to create a draw for people to play. Kingston has a big group of highly competitive players that travel for tournaments so a lot of them don't show up to 'just play' and treat it more as practice for tournaments. So adding a fee and prize amount keeps people playing to win.
Some stores have free standard nights. I know SBT has 2-3 free events during the week if you check their facebook page for their weekly schedule.

However I live on Montreal st now, just wondering would they let me sit on the sidelines at nexus and play people who lose?

I have done that beforehand when I tried to play Magic and it went well enough. Fair warning though, your matches might get cut short when they have to rotate. But definitely doable!
