So, to anyone that knows tau well, I have a question. I found a tau apocalypse box online. Assuming I could only get one box, which would be better, the new tau battleforce, or the tau apocalypse box?

Assuming I could only get one box, which would be better, the new tau battleforce, or the tau apocalypse box? I feel like the Apoc box would be better, but without a pair of Y'vahra's doing the Sept cheese of increased range, along with a ton of commanders and drones, it's just sub-par options. The point hike on the Riptides means they don't normally make their points back before dying (from what I remember) and Tau are still really playing the game of "spam X unit, apply broken sept trait".

If you're starting from scratch, the christmas bundle. If you already have a decent force, and like crisis suits for some reason, the Apoc box.
If you're looking for bleeding edge competetive, the current hotness is 3 heavy burst riptides, 3 quad fusion or quad cyclic ion blaster commanders, and 35-40 shield drones. This style of list just won Socal Open and Nova Open, and took 3rd at the Bay Area Open. A more static Shadowsun+broadside castle style list was doing things for a while, but the static nature and weakness to being completely shut down by a couple of charges has seen its popularity go down. Y'vahra's are now over-priced and far outpace their drone support, as well as lacking good synergy with stratagems.
However, all this may change with Chapter Approved 2019 around the corner. Rumours are that there may be a riptide points hike, but a reduction in weapon costs around the board.
My suggestion? Buy what looks cool. What's "good" or "bad" fluctuates so often, you'd be in the poor house trying to keep up.
