Is there a specific detachment type I should be using for my army?

A lot of that really depends on what army you play and what units you want to bring.
I typically try to start a list with a Battalion if for no other purpose than the sweet, sweet +5 CP. If you can fit a double Battalion, then you're in good shape, or a Battalion and one of the "specialty" detachments to gain more of a slot that you may not have enough of with how you wanted ot build your army.
- Supreme Command = all the HQ's - Vanguard = elites - Outrider = fast attach - Spearhead = Heavy support - etc. - etc.
For example, my Thousand Sons had a Battalion for the primary, then a Vanguard to gain more slots to fit additional dreads, and lastly a Superheavy Auxiliary Detachment for a pair of war dogs.

To echo what voodoo said, every army should have at least one Battalion (or Super Heavy detachment, if you're playing exclusively Knights/Chaos Knights).
And you can't go wrong by adding more of either.
