I've heard some good things about Rustoleum in relation to priming minis online, but was wondering if anyone here has used it for that purpose, and if so, how it went? It's about half the price of GW primer, so that's really tempting.

I'd be super careful about the Canadian Tire type sprays
saving a few bucks is great and all, but if it comes out thick you've just wrecked your model.
That being said, I've never personally used it, so don't really know from experience. I would just test on a bit of leftover sprue first to make sure the thickness.
go light with primer always!

I've used matte black before. It takes a bit more time to dry, it's done a good job for me. The big thing though, is that it REALLY needs to be dry to go on to plastic well, avoid spraying on humid days, or invest in a dehhumidifier for the room in which you plan on spraying.

I have used it for other projects that aren't warhammer related but it can go on somewhat evenly and thin but it can be globby if you don't shake it for 2-3 minutes and on humid day, i know its half the price less but i would still recommend buying army painter or GW or someother miniature primer paints because with ones not ment for minis i.e enamel based or latex paints once it gets on there and small detail cracks it won't come off unless you use heavy acids or solvents and at that point you run the risk of damaging the mini more so its a one shot kinda deal once on there it what you have to deal with, unlike the army paint and gw stuff where you can use simple green to take it off really easily with little to no issue with no damage to the mini unless its finecast resin which you wanna be careful. (I've been stripping and repainting pre-owned minis for the past few months and bad enamel primes will ruin a mini and its details)

I've used krylon spray primer with good results. I found it pretty comparable to GW's black, just not as dark (I always try for light coats).
These days I used vallejo brush on sprayed through my airbrush. I hate spray cans in general though.

I guess I should avoid it. Sort of sucks, as I don't want to use Army Painter primer, as I've had nothing but bad experiences there, and GW sprays are so pricey.
I'll look into that Krylon that dave there mentioned. Thanks.

Specifically, it was Krylon Colormaster, paint + primer, black. Only colour I've tried. Was certainly inexpensive.
GW makes great models, but it's hard for me to believe the quality of their primers are really worth the upcharge. Their paint brushes certainly don't work any better for having the citadel label and associated cost. But that's only my opinion. Only ever bought two cans of GW spray. Hated the white, the black was fine.
The krylon seemed to have enough recommendations online, and I've since used it on about 2k points and didn't notice any loss of detail or other issues.
Can't say how easily it strips, I've never done that with anything I've painted.
Excess humidity should definitely be avoided with any spray cans. Seems to rule out 80% of the days around here, but that was one of the reasons I stopped using spray primer altogether. The other reason was wanting to do it indoors. Airbrushing it on is just easier for me. Two things I miss about edmonton; dry air, and great deals on kijiji (airbrush).

I've heard Painter's Touch primer is used alot as well... but again, spray light and test on a sprue first then you'll know if it will work or not!

I have used Krylon Camo spray paints to prime and they are decent to use as they are chemically formulated to bond with plastic and be matte. Comes in black, two shades of brown and two shades of green.
It used to be easily available at Walmart and Home Depot but I haven’t seen them in a while. Haven’t tried Canadian Tire or Home Hardware though.
I have a friend who has used Rustoleum and hasn’t said anything bad about them.
