So, I got a starter set today. I plan to keep both sides/forces for myself. However, I figure it would be easier and more cost effective to start with one half, and focus on expanding that to a complete army rather than doing both at once.
While I like the look of both Necrons and the newer Primaris (As well as some of the older Primaris), I don't know which side to start with. If anyone could fill me in on why they think I should pick one side over the other, please let me know. All opinions are welcome.

Hmm, what sort of previous experience do you have with 40k and what type of playstyle do you prefer?
Primaris Space Marines are a fairly straightforward army that can do pretty much everything well.
Necrons are more of an endurance army wearing down the opposition while retaining their own forces for longer. They might not always have the same alpha-strike capability of other factions, they can be hard to put down.

It’s worth taking a look at what is coming out for both armies as well over coming weeks. Some of the new models are just amazing and might sway you. If one or two kits really stand out to you, I’d say start there. You have to want to paint what you have and when a kit gets you that excited, the army kind of speaks for itself.

I really like the idea of Primaris, but my problem is that I really like the flavourful units of the more specialized chapters like Blood Angels and Space Wolves have and since they lack the Primaris range in those specialty units, I find it hard to commit to all-primaris right now.
That said, if you are sticking to the non-supplement-required chapters, the Primaris range extensions that have come out in the last several months are incredible.
Necrons on the other hand an an army I had quite a few games against wayyy back in 3rd ed, as well as numerous games during 6th against them. They seemed plagued by a lot of issues that this codex looks to resolve (mono-build, certain units being must-take to be even casually-competitive, lack of unit diversity and model-range support). I think all these issues are greatly improved with the avalanche of new releases, and the new ruleset certainly has the pleasant aroma of the "ground up rework" that was advertised by GW.

Upon thinking it over, and looking at available models/units, I think I will start with Necrons. Something about them just speaks to me.
Thanks guys.

Blood angels and space wolves all have the same primaris models as everyone else. Even the new bladeguard come with the wolf guard keyword if taken with wolves.

combine the kits with primaris... seen that done and it looks amazing (especially now that all marines have gone to 2 wounds)

They really just made the legs longer. If you take an old marine torso and put it on Primaris legs, the effect is the same.

So, the non-leg parts of old marines fit will with Primaris legs, and then they'd be the right size? Good to know.
