okay, so while I'm trying to paint the 60+ gems on each wraithblade (I'm not even kidding... I counted) a thought came to me.
shouldn't there be ONE gem on these dudes? isn't it a gem to keep the eldar soul safe from slaanesh?
putting 60 souls on one wraithblade seems like a terrible idea (especially since they're not exactly difficult to kill).
So I'm looking at it as the wraith units are trapping the souls of the eldar around them into soul traps to deliver them to Slaanesh.
I mean otherwise it just seems like the eldar aren't thinking this through a whole lot... which is supposed to be their thing right?
maybe one of you pointy-hat lore people can clear this up... as it seems very inefficient. "alright - it takes 10 souls to move the right leg... everyone together now GO!"

How old are the models? It may be a case of new lore, old models.
For example, years ago, Custodes were guys that wore loin cloths and had no power armour. This changed sometime before the Horus Heresy book series started, at least, to my understanding that is the case.
My point is that the lore has changed a lot over the years, and if the model is old enough, may just be outdated.
Or it could be a case of "it looks cool, so why not"?
I don't know enough about elder lore to give a proper lore answer though, sorry.

My personal thought has always been that one is the soul gem, the rest are decoys/decoration

Eldar armour has circuit clusters beneath it for energy cells, motors, and other systems, which appear as bumps or nodules on the surface. There’s a few designer commentaries from way back saying they could be painted as gemstones, but the ‘correct’ way is to paint them as the same color as the armour plate.
What looks like a gem may just be a bump in the armour.

wife looks at completed wraithguard with gems as I explain to her that they shouldn't have gems.
"they look way better with gems do that"
...but....
"keep going"
she's not wrong, it does look better... so I keep going (I'm almost half way done them all anyways so might as well at this point as it's just as much work to repaint the ones I did and start over)
They're collecting soul stones to bring to their slaanesh masters... there... I'm committed....

The most well documented imagery of Custodes is this very famous piece by John Blanche. This particular piece was in the 1993 Codex Imperialis. You can see that most of the main parts of the modern Custodian are present, though the helmets are a tiny bit less ridiculous now.

What's really funny, is actually according to the lore, the "real" soulstone that actually has the soul controlling a wraith is buried deep inside the heavily armoured head of the wraith so that in the event is it destroyed the stone can be recovered and put into another wraith easily. So technically if you were only painting the soul-stone, you'd paint nothing at all.
Personally, I'm all for picking out all the gems, your army will look really ornate and have this strange very foreign effect to them, which for Eldar is perfect because as humans that how they SHOULD feel. They are a completely different race who looks down on us as dirty apes who don't even understand how to use our opposable thumbs correctly. I mean, after all we consciously decided to name our home planet "DIRT". =P
Honestly, if your color scheme vs your gem color has the correct contrasting color balance in it, the look of all the gems/nodes/circuits picked out is gunna look baller AF. If you already started, keep going!

I'm told that this shirtless Custodes that I've just posted is way back from the Rogue Trader edition of the game (IE, first edition). Apparently, they were shirtless due to mourning over the Emperor. The Text to Speech youtube series did not invent shirtless Custodes, but they did did them up.
