Shamelessly stealing this idea from StepwisePilot over on the AOS board So, to drive away isolation boredom, I figured I'd ask a question here for anyone that cares to answer: What made you decide on the army or armies you have? Why'd you pick them basically. There are many reasons I've seen on other sites, such as "They are strong", "They are simple and easy to use, "They look good", etc. In this case though, I want to know why the local Kingston community picked their armies. Personally, I started my Eldar army back in 2003, and I was really torn between starting with Eldar or Dark Eldar (or Craftworlds vs Drukhari these days) What finally broke the dead heat for me was unfortunately a combination of 2 things. 1) The infamous 3rd edition Ultra Marines vs Dark Eldar Starter set where the Dark Eldar pretty much got demolished every time by the clearly superior space marines 2) The quote on the spine of the 3rd edition Eldar Codex which stated "Their arrogance is matched only by their firepower" The first time I leafblower-ed someone off the table with Shuriken was a magical moment for me. I still main Craftworlds 17 years later (and my Eldar collection was recently estimated as around 8000+ points in 9th edition)

My first army was tau. the reason i picked them was because of the origonal dawn of war video game. scrolling thought the armies and this mech suit jumps out of the sky and is blasting away. me "thats the army im playing"
the army i play the most now is iron hands. Actual wasn't even my first marine choice but the one i like the most now. there was a guy getting out of the hobby and sold me all his iron hand stuff. i read up and them and like dreadnoughts so they were a great choice for me.
i also like to have a diverse themes behind my armies so i also have tzeetch deamons and blood angels.

I picked up Thousand Sons by chance back in 2nd edition with the mushroom-bottom Tzeentch troops of that era. By sheer happenstance, not knowing the history between the legions; my best friend chose Space Wolves. It's been a life-long joke that we have we'll never "truly" be friends because our armies are rivals.
Nurgle didn't even come into play for me until 6th ed when I could have a zombie horde.
Then Knights came out and I was able to play big stompy robots, I don't need any other reason than that; just big...stompy...robots...
I've got plans for Necrons and Harlequins as well because I've always wanted to paint harlies and I think LED crons would be a cool challenging project to model, but in the end, I always consider Thousand Sons my primary army.

Dark Angels for me. And I go back all the way to Rogue Trader. The background was interesting and the entry cost was lower as it was an "elite" army. Most editions have not been kind to them but I still like them well enough to keep them as my primary army. And as they have not been a common army I can sometimes get a laugh out my opponent's "they can do WHAT?" as I explain my army list.

I started with Dark Eldar at the dawn of 3rd Edition. I had also been toying with either Necrons or Tyranids, but a sweet deal on a full army swung the vote and my love of the Dark Eldar was locked in. I changed a lot of peoples minds about them and just how good they could be when played properly ( ray as you said that 3rd Ed start box really made them seem horrible). I even held strong even through all the rumours that they were going to be "Squatted" after going more than 2 editions without a new codex or any real update. I pretty much solo played them until 5th edition when I start branching out more (yay ebay) and since then I have amassed a decent collection of Orks, Grey Knights, Salamanders, Ravenguard, Word Bearers, Chaos Knights, Custodes, Daemons and Eldar.

Well my first armies were all warhammer fantasy... I resisted 40k for a few years because I didn't like the aesthetic of the space marines and I played D&D all my life so it was all about the dragons and monsters and ogres and such.
Then I picked up some Tyranids.... and it went crazy from there. Loved my nids and still play them even though they were my first army in 40k back with the 4th edition book (with the truly customizable carnifex!). I've amassed about 6,000 points worth of them over the years.
I probably play daemons more than any other faction.. and probably own more daemons than any other army (I'm thinking about 12,000 points - almost entirely painted)
I've went through a custom conversion phase where I converted smurfs, squats, angry marines, statue blood angels, but I only have the smurfs left of those. Have a bunch of star wars converted armies with homebrew codex for 40k that are on the shelf for the moment while 9th shakes out.
Built and sold necrons only to buy them all over again... finally relented and got marines and built a salamanders army... then there's sisters, wraith host, genestealer cult and full coven dark eldar.
So I went from not playing 40k at all to being neck deep in sci-fi plastic. But over time it became my favourite miniatures game.

Iron Warriors back in 3e. Loved the idea of siege warriors, obliterators, having a basilisk, etc. Also I just loved the emblem. Those were the days.

I hope to someday try getting back into 40K. Maybe whenever 10th would drop. Who knows. I really like the look of the Thousand Sons.
Also, as long as you admit it's shameless topic theft, it's ok, hahaha.

I started with dark eldar back in 5th because they just got new models and darn it did they ever look cool. Got hooked on them for a bit then custom made my own pain Lord (talos pain wraith Lord) then as I was reading the codex for the 10,000,000th time I stumbled upon the lore of the harlequin. Thought they were cool as heck but boy did the models look like shit. Then 7th happened and they dropped all new models for the harlies and they got a lot better looking. Then came 8th and a couple buddies and I decided to see what 300 bucks could buy us for a new army, there was only 3 of us in Revelstoke that played 40k so playing the same 3 armies got pretty boring. I wanted to go with daemons of slaanesh but I couldn't find them anywhere.......I was in a store and they didn't have then so I impulse bought the ad mech. Still to this day I love them. I don't own any.... Anymore, but I love them. Then I found a cheap renegade box set and well, big stompy robots happened. To this day the harlies are my go to.
Oh and I ended up getting those pesky demons of slaanesh to which all the characters minus 2 are all third party models

Started off in 2012 encountering 40k entirely by accident while playing Yugioh at APC when someone walked by with this great looking CSM army - looked into it and decided to get Tyranids because I was still playing Starcraft back then and played Zerg (terrible economic decision for a high school kid)
Had to basically drop it due to time and money during university, and recently picked it back up after grabbing a great deal on an Imperial Guard army lot.
I think I always deep down wanted to play IG for the aesthetic of using the most basic of human weapons against the most fantastical enemies - Interdimensional Daemons? Star Gods? Super-advanced Gundam Suits? we'll match them with lots of men with guns and tanks with shells that make the big boom.
Eventually I think I'll be wanting to get into Ad Mech for the cyborg aethetic, but I think I'll always have a special with lots of average human with lots average tanks and guns.

Started with the box set of "Warhammer 40,000 Battle for Macragge". Gave away the Tyranids to a friend, kept the Marines. Sold my marines to start a Deamons army in 5th edition. Stopped playing for awhile. Came back at the end of 7th, start of 8th with an Imperial Guard army by selling my old Deamons of Tzeentch. Bought the Indomitus Crusade box set, sold Necrons to a friend and kept the Marines.
Marines 4th - Deamons 5th - Guard 7th 8th 9th - Marines TBD... Now to buy starter sets and have my friends, family, students join in on the fun.
Marines (Gone); I liked the fact that i'd be playing super humans and loved their lore. It was the Ultramarines VS Tyranids. I was very into Starcraft at the time.
Deamons (Gone); Participated in a tournament and saw a Great Unclean One made of Resin. Started to read about Chaos Deamons and went for a Tzeentch army with Pink Horrors, Flamers, Screamers, Lord of change, all in metal. I didn`t like the way they played on the tabletop so decided to abandon them.
Astra Militarum; Love the Idea of normal humans fighting against all odds. Wanted an army with ALOT of bodies, debated between Tyranids, Orks and Guard. Went with Guard for the human factor.
Primaris Marines; Love the new size and models from the Indomitus Box. Most likely on keep them at 1000 points. Will build them to be Black Templars as I LOVED the audiobook Hellsreach along with the Youtube video.
Next army; Will dabble in Starter sets. Most Likely Craftworld, Tau or Tyranids.
I still don't know what I want to play though. I like them all but I'm sticking with Guard for now.
