So, I was recently gifted some 40K models. Got them in the mail from people. Early Christmas gift, yay. I do plan to assemble and paint them and such, but I don't want to attach them to their bases right away as I want to make their bases all fancy and such. So, it's best to do that with no model on the base, and even once it's done I don't want to glue the model on until after it's painted as well, as I wouldn't want to get paint all over the base that I would have worked so hard on.
As such, I would have to paint them without any base to hold onto. It's what I did with my Gargant for AoS. However, that was a rather big model, so it was easy to find a spot that was dry to hold onto while I painted other parts. With a smaller, infantry sized model that would be a bit more difficult.
The only idea I can think of is to blue tack them to a spare base, but I worry that won't work, as I fear that me painting them would just push them off the blue tack, and thus make the model fall.
Any advice?

I've taken to adding a tiny bit of super glue to one foot (or similarly small bit attached to the base). Paint the model, remove, paint the base, and stick the model back on. Works well enough for infantry.

Pin them using a pin vice and a piece of paperclip in the foot - use a cork from a wine bottle to stick them in. when your base is done, trim the paperclip so it can be used to secure through the base.
(if you're painting up a cork style base you need to pin them anyways)
If you're painting a basic base and you still want to do it separately then blue-tac
or just use a bit of glue to attach to a spare base, then snap it off when it's done... just use very little, just enough to hold it.
Or, don't paint them separately at all. This works just fine most of the time (and how I do 95% of my models)

Like Jack, I rarely paint a figure off base. And while I don't usually plug products I have to admit that the GW painting handles have come in handy for keeping my bear paw hands free of paint.

Well, the reason why I want to do the base and model separate is because when I paint the model, I tend to get the base all messy, and apparently what I want to try is done best without a model on it anyway.
I have to ask, what's a pin vice? I have plenty of paper clips, and I can look around for corks.

If you have any spare bases kicking around, 25mm are perfect, just put a lil drop of super glue ( NOT PLASTIC GLUE) and it will hold the model steady while you paint, then When your done, you can with a tiny bit of pressure snap the model clean off the 25mm base then glue it to the proper base and bingo bango, yer all set

Thank you. I'll look into that after the holidays.

I always paint first then glue to bases afterwards, but I realize I'm in a minority. Sometimes I'll glue a foot to a stainless steel rod; but most of the time I just manhandle the model till it's finished. Make sure you wash your hands well though, and if you have one, wear a glove.
