So for those of you not aware, the LVO is one of the biggest tournies in 40k, and this year obviously that isn't happening due to the stupid pandemic. So a bunch of streamers and top names in competitive 40K are having a streamed version of the LVO, where they play off against one another with competitive lists and stream the results to all of us... for free... It's happening this weekend, and there are a TON of games scheduled, and every army is different, so you actually get a really good representation of how armies are performing. Here's the schedule: www.lasvegasnopen.net/stream-schedule

It's really cool how they're doing the format. Because players can't be the ones to advance, it has to be the list that advances. It'll be interesting to see different "pro" players behind the wheel of the different lists.

yeah it's an interesting way to have progression in a tournament without violating all the covid restrictions - including the hassle of trying to get someone in California to play someone in Australia!

I have to say, I think Brian from TTT has a really good strategy for this. Make a simple and brutal list that just wants to smash face (They are calling it Blood Angels ABC. Always Be Charging), and is easy for other generals to figure out how to pilot. If it can get past Adrien's undefeated-on-stream Harlequins in round 1 tonight, I think it has the power to go deep.
There's a lot of big-names that will be piloting lists, and I suspect the outcome of this tournament is going to heavily shape/influence the meta for the next few months with a general lack of tournaments having been played even since 9th launched last year (for obvious reasons).
I'll certainly be tuning in when I can

Interesting results coming in from the Nopen so far.
Semi finals have boiled down to a pretty standard-meta-looking Sisters list vs a very creative Drukhari Raiding Party list which features Mandrakes?!? and Scourges?!? in one bracket, while in the other bracket we've got a purity-off with a Grey Knights list featuring Purifier Spam and Paladins facing off against Sisters with triple-Retributors and an allied Custodes detachment featuring Trajan, a Bike Captain, and 10 Golden Bois with Storm Shields
Not a single model from a 9th edition codex in the final four by what I can tell.

Ya there were some surprising upsets from what I can tell.

We have a final.
Drukhari vs Sisters + Custodes
I haven't seen enough of the games to see it in action, but apparently the Custodes detachment has been a really important part of the list. The fans are chanting #SHIELDWALL

The Drukhari have been winning because of mass shots and Ob Sec. They have really good board control. Really surprised by the list. However it does seem Sisters are pretty powerfull as they made semi's and finals, ( well partly for the finals.)

sisters are a quite good well rounded force (something about having their codex written when 9th was already well underway being tested I'm guessing). The custodes are a powerhouse so I'm not surprised the combo works, although to be honest I haven't really seen that combination winning tournies thus far, so always cool to see a new list doing so well!

Yeah, the takeaways I can see that helped make the winning list from the Nopen:
Custodes with Storm Shields are hard as friggin' rock at T5 W3 1+/3++, those two five-man units were a HUGE contribution to the winning list. They were near impossible to shift off objectives, and would simply stand there ready to heroically intervene into anything willing to come and try to touch their objective.
Re-watching the finals stream, John Lennon wasn't fooled by any of the trademarked elf-trickery, and cut Nick Nanavati off at the pass on objective grabbing every time. He scored 40 of 45 primary points in the final match, which ultimately powered him to a decisive victory.
If JT's Dark Eldar list is still mostly compatible with the new dex when it drops in a week or two, I'd expect a lot of copy-cats of that list as well, it was incredibly strong and in the hands of Brian from TTT was able to take out a very meta-sisters-netlist on it's route to the finals.
Sisters obviously looking incredible atm. Every player who piloted one of the two Sister's lists was able to abuse Miracle Dice for some absolutely gross and broken tactics. I'd hate to see Sisters have their trademark mechanic nerfed into oblivion, but I can't help but feel the playtesters and GW play testers are seeing the same thing given how easily all these players picked up on how and when to use them.

*cough cough* Looks familiar doesn't it? Almost like he had some sort of... tactical forethought... into how those Custodes were to be used...

posting custodes up on midfield objectives has been going on since custodes were first released, so nothing new.
The trick is having them sit there, scoring While we stand as bait to have someone try and focus on them (or lose primary and give him 15 points for the secondary). while the retributors unleash multi-melta hell and the repentia act as a counter charge element.
it's the combo of two of the best sisters units with some rock hard custodes that carry the day.

Oh I realize this is nothing new, I just wanted to point out it's an absolute textbook example of a Fortress plan being played.

Also this is on of the cases where the changes to " While we stand we fight" was massive. he was able to use 3 custodies units to get him an easy 10-15 points in the match up PLUS it forced the other player to have to target the much harder to kill units. I think its fair to say that both the nerfs to retributors and repentia were very small slaps on the wrist and we could see another 1-2 pt increase on both pretty easily. I am happy that something other than marines won but it does look like outside of imperial guard the Imperium has good depth and that while soup has taken a huge nerf there is still a ton of options for lists that mix both for narrative and competitive reasons.
