Ya this article is really showing that they want the game to be polished at a competitive level in thier matches play setting.
I really like it, I'm glad that they took steps to have crusade feel really good as friendly gaming but still are pushing to keep big LOV style stuff in reach without the need for things like ITC

I just hope this extra attention to balance makes its way down to the codex level. It's a shame when enthusiasm, or lack of, for an army makes all the effort to balance the missions largely meaningless.

Wow, the fact they were able to definitively confirm a ~58% win rate for first turn advantage, and then selectively adjust the rules really shows how much better they are getting at targeted balance changes.
For those of us who remember the dark days of "beer and pretzels", this is wild to watch unfold.

The best part is the beer and pretzel play is still very much alive in open/narrative/ crusade game.
I'm happy that they seem to have embraced the idea that while they are a miniatures company, your rules will help drive sales as well. Good rules more sales.

I just hope this extra attention to balance makes its way down to the codex level. It's a shame when enthusiasm, or lack of, for an army makes all the effort to balance the missions largely meaningless. Good news is all the 9th edition codexes they've released are very good. yeah for those of us still waiting for their dex it's rough right now, but I have a LOT of hope that if they keep going this way we'll have a (largely) balanced playing field. I think the big questions is what are they going to do with Tau, GSC, Imperial guard, Nids and Thousand Sons, as by their own stats, those armies are all struggling more than others right now. The changes to abhor the witch and bring it down help considerably (especially guard and nids). I am probably most interested in what they are doing with Tau and GSC, as I think they require the most ground up thinking to make them work due to their playstyle. Tau needs the most work I think, but adding back in fall back and shoot is a good first step. Hell maybe even bring back JSJ for their battlesuits. Tsons having a few adjustments to their current rules (rubrics going to 2 wounds for certain, Magnus getting buffed, reworking how their psychic works) is going to change their fate alot. Nids will need someone to figure out their internal balance, which can be done with their current basic structure (only about a half dozen units need to change significantly). I'm really interested to see what is going to happen with the guard with their current adjustments to bring it down and last turn scoring if going second. They also seem like a few changes could bring them very much in line with the current books.

I will take heart from your enthusiasm, even if I don't set my hopes TOO high. As tau is my only army, I know I'm asking for a lot of effort on GW's part to reignite my enthusiasm for 40k. I don't care about being a top contender, but the army just fits so poorly into 9th edition. As you say, a large rework of their mechanics and playstyle is required. I am certainly looking forward to what they come up with.
Would love to see GSC get a proper balance as well. Amazing models with a unique mechanic and yet right out of the gate everything they were good at was hard countered by the opposition.
My faith in Guard is pretty unshakable. They will end up being decent, if not fantastic, by the time their book comes, I'm sure.

One thing I will say is once we can start getting back to more normal game aying schedule I definately want to check out the crusade stuff more. Seems like the rules are pretty simple to follow but still super fun. A warzone Nexus campaign sounds pretty cool.
