Shannon has yet to win a single game with his craftowlrd eldar ghost army. Not a single win, not even close.
Comparing tournament lists to a fun weekend beer and pretzels style army is like comparing a Honda Civic to an F1 car. One can be fun to drive, maybe has some bells and whistles while the other is built for a singular purpose.
When Shannon and I play, I ask him to bring a tough list because I like to play tougher lists. If I'm playing someone who doesn't know the game well, or who isn't a competetive player, I'll bring an unoptimized army with more of the fun units from the codex that I find flavorful and cool; but likely don't do well in a tournament setting.
Bottom line is this. It's a game; it's built for people to find an element of it that appeals to each of us in kind and compells us to play. If you can't find the element within 40k that's fun for you, then don't play.

This game is about expectations. When you go to play a game with someone it's super easy to first outline if you're looking for a "fun" or "competitive" game. This is what I ask someone literally every time I play them. Unless of course I'm playing at a tournament when I bring something that is appropriate to the expectations of the tournament... or I'm playing a ringer army as a T.O. where I honestly bring a fun list to a competitive environment and have fun playing despite winning or losing.
I've been playing since 4th edition, and feel that 9th is the most balanced edition I've ever played. There are maybe 2-3 armies that are struggling right now (and Orks are NOT one of them - they are doing quite well competitively) and the rest can all definitely play a competitive game. Any of the armies in the game can play a fun and balanced game. There isn't one army out there that cannot do that.
When we're talking about Mortarian, or any of the big competitive new things out there, it's about discussing tactics of how to counter. (Same thing when Imperial Knights were first on the scene or any of the other nasty stuff that gets released).
Certainly if you aren't having fun playing, then make sure the person you are playing is aware of the expectations for the game. There are crusade rules in 9th (super friendly) as well as narrative play, using power level instead of points, etc. etc.
There are more ways than ever to have a friendly, balanced game of 40k. The system is fully designed for that.

Too give a slight difference of opinion because everyone is different... I think more often then not the opponent is the one that makes a game good or bad sometimes. Which is why sportsmanship is included as points... so bad people like Shannon behave better Lmao. But as an anecdotal reference last year I played voodoo and got wrecked, absolutly smashed, but it was fine because his wife was there and was lovely to talk too. Just kidding they were both fun, but you get my point, and overall great community here for that.
