Stuff like Grot Oilers or Ammo Runts? Are they wounds on the table that can be used to soak up an incoming wound, or are they just place-markers for an ability of the unit they are attached to? Do they take up a slot in a transport? Can they be used for seat-belt tests?

"A Grot Oiler does not count as a model for any rules purposes"
Doesn't take up slots, can't absorb a transport casualty. As you say, basically just a marker to remind you that the ability is available.

Mmk.. Thanks.. They used to be able to be used as ablative wounds, right? My brain has some crossed wires, someplace (I mean, beyond an "in general" sense) and I think I have been assuming they are "models" when filling transports and the like. ?

I think it was the last codex or the one before that where the runts counted as actual models and could be used to take wounds
I remember playing against an ork player and we had to look it up since he was still new to the army at the time.
They were a 5pt upgrade for Nobs so he took one for each Nob in his units and they soaked a lot of shooting

Yeah... That is what I remember doing... So many Grotz got used as airbags in Trukks and Wagons... Ammo Runts were like having a free 2 wounds on your Nobz mob (which have no shooting worth a 5pt reroll, so I don't know why Nobz get Ammo Runts even...)
[shrugs] If they're just pretty tokens now, I am fine by this. I will still take as many of them as I can cram in to my lists. (currently up to 7, in my Freebooterz list)

Yeah the old armorium cherub and I want to say watcher in the dark also both in 8th edition could be used as an ablative wound. It's a wider design decision to remove these types of models as they add new books and they're basically just a spendable upgrade now.

As 8th books are replaced with 9th books this is becoming standard.
GSC can for example still pawn wounds into their familiar. However that will go away in 4 weeks or so when the 9th Codex launches and familiars will just become a token.

So, once they aren't really used like they used to be, is there any reason to still put them on the table? Other than a person putting in the time and effort to assemble and paint them, so by God they will be seen!

Other than a person putting in the time and effort to assemble and paint them, so by God they will be seen! They now generally mark a one-use upgrade. So you spend it then remove them. But you don't actually need them at all, no.

But you don't actually need them at all, no. Correct, you technically don't NEED them. But I personally find they are helpful for remembering if you spent the ability or not. My GSC familiars for example are still on sprue, but I'll certainly paint them up if I'm planning to use them. One less thing to remember in one's head during a game.
