Watched it with my partner that doesn't play. Was pretty funny and informative.

So, I have a question.
The Secret Santa thread says that gifts are to be around $10 in value. However, I've been told that in previous years, there have been models, and even entire sets worth $100+ being in the gift pile. I'm assuming that I was lied to, as this is all way more expensive than $10, but the guy was adamant that it was true.
My question is if he lied to me, or are there actually cases of people bringing really expensive things as gifts to Secret Santa tournaments? Once again, I'm assuming it's a lie, but there is no harm in asking.

My question is if he lied to me, or are there actually cases of people bringing really expensive things as gifts to Secret Santa tournaments? Once again, I'm assuming it's a lie, but there is no harm in asking. You weren't lied to by anyone. The gifts are supposed to be $10, and they have have sometimes been more and in one notable exception there was a Soulstorm starter box. The Soulstorm box (which my roommate won, and I later traded him for!) was thrown into the santa pile by Mike. As a nicety he donated a full starter box to the santa pile as well as the raffle, which isn't really the same as someone just showing up with a flagrantly massive secret santa gift. Additionally because it was yankee swap that meant the literal worst performing player who picked last was guaranteed the expensive item as a consolation prize, and that's exactly what happened.
Sometimes stuff over $10 works its way into the pile but those are the exception and, I think in many cases, represent NIB kits people already had lying around rather than deliberate purchases. In general the gifts should be $10 in value- if you go over that's on you, but the point is not to be a 'who can buy the most extravagant gift' competition.

Ah, good to know. To be honest, I was hoping that should I ever have enough put together and painted, then one year I'd try to join the Secret Santa. However, hearing that made me feel like I'd be laughed at if I only brought something worth $10, so it's nice to know that it's not the norm.

The norm is something approximating $10... the big present was an extra thrown in by Mike as a reward for how much the community was supporting his store... but the normal gifts are all around $10 or so... sometimes up to $20 at times... but definitely not extravagant. There have even been baking given as gifts (which is awesome)

I thought it was a good list of options. While I have a lot of what's on it, I still made a list of some items I thought my wife and son might want to consider for me. As to Secret Santa, remember those 19+ labels where appropriate. My last one was Fireball Whisky (very seasonally appropriate and quite tasty if you ask me), but not for all players.
