The 9th edition books have categories for all the strats - epic deeds is just one of the categories' names. Doesn't really mean much of anything other than how they organize things. (ie: poorly)
saviour protocols changing to a strat is a huge change. Means it can only be used once a phase.
EDIT: ninja'd by Ray!

Epic deed strategem sounds like a way to restrict how often they can be used. Maybe you can only do 1 epic deed per phase? Sounds terrible, but wouldn't surprise me if they used this book to test a new concept. Tau did have the honour of beinf limited to 1 commander per detachment way before any other armies saw this limitation. Or maybe it's already a thing in other books. I dunno, I've really fallen out of the loop when it comes to codex design. You got it in the second half. All 9th edition Stratagems were given a keyword, like Battle Tactic, Epic Dead, Strategic Ploy, and so on. Only a couple of things have keyed off of the keywords so far. For example, Dante from the Blood Angels reduces the cost of an Epic Deed stratagem to 0 CP once per battle. *Edit* Ninja'd by Ray AND Shannon while I did research!

Epic deed is a keyword for stratgems. All 9th edition books have strategems with these keywords on them. So far all they do is give a hint as to when that strat can be used or what is needed to use them. THere was some talk early on of the strategm categories being used for abilities the played around with stratagem costs etc....but that hasnt materialized...so yeah as you said they are basically just categorizing the stratagems

Back to the topic
having 3x units disembark after moving for a 1 CP stratagem is awesome....im not presently a Tau player...but that is seariously scratching the mech infantry itch I have always wanted Tau to fill.

The strat is powerful though. The fact that you can stack saves and then still get to turn it to 0 damage.
Like a commander can have a 4++ re-roll with CP. Fail then still turn damage to zero. Could make for some tough cookies

Epic deed is a keyword for stratgems. All 9th edition books have strategems with these keywords on them. So far all they do is give a hint as to when that strat can be used or what is needed to use them. I can actually cite one specific example where it does more than fluff:
Commander Dante has "Once per battle, if this model is selected to use an Epic Deed Stratagem, that Stratagem costs 0 Command points." which is the only case I know of with such a restriction.
It actually sucks, makes the ability much much worse than one would think at a quick read and requires you to memorize the strats it actually applies to (iirc just two in his case but if they did this a lot it would quickly become onerous.)
Edit: goddamnit somebody already pointed it out. Oh well I tried. I'm not Typhus

Thanks for the clarification, everyone. Why look stuff up when there are so many helpful individuals around?

Fortunately I'm going to get away with only codex and data cards. I'm satisfied with my big shas as darkstrider. Will be nice to have an excuse to swing by nexus again.
The codex has me excited to paint up some more troops and tanks (that I already own), which is great, because that's what got me into this army in the first place. Oh, and a bunch more crisis suit weapons, I guess (less excited).
