Got a disappointing email from Ebay today. In order to comply with new Canadian regulations, they are now going to be collecting tax from all Canadian buyers. Currently we only pay tax on purchases from registered Canadian business sellers, starting July 1st, we will see that 13% on everything.
This is definitely going to impact my own purchasing habits, particularly from my favourite UK box splitters, and used model sellers. A couple of them have already fallen off my list of places to watch, due to increasing shipping costs eating too much of the discount.
In addition to shipping, I'll have to add that tax into my "highest bid" calculations. Will just have to see if that allows me to stay competitive or not. Worst case I buy fewer models. Probably not a terrible scenario, come to think of it...

Key thing too is that this impacts all online shopping in Canada
Used to be thst online sellers could charge just GST or their provincial tax rate (made buying from Alberta awesome living in NB)
Now tax jurisdiction for online sales to Canada is based on where the product is being delivered to/the purchase made from.
Will also apply to subscription services...

If the sellers don't have a tax ID, it'll also double-tap for the government as the buyer will get hit, but so will the seller.

This actually also applies to digitally delivered products too. Expect to see Steam and other similar platforms starting to have to charge you tax on anything you buy for digital download.

It was just a matter of time. If you didn't see it coming eventually, this was the rude awakening. Governments hate to miss out on revenue, just like businesses. The golden era of tax-less internet shopping is officially dead.

Well damn, hadn't thought of that one. Ebay plus steam/digital game stores are probably 80% of my entertainment purchases. At least the video games I buy are always massively discounted, or inexpensive indie stuff anyway. That extra % wont be too tough to swallow on $15-35 purchases.
With gw products, I'm always trying to shave as much as possible to make the purchase more palatable. My min/max game happens well before the tabletop haha.

I buy everything at Nexus... I'd rather not save a few bucks and have a place to play games. Given that great space and playing for free, and all the tourney support has to be supported from somewhere, I'm not buying online, even if I can save $20 here and there.

That's definitely one of the more stimulating parts about this hobby. I get to feel guilty about how much of my household finances goes toward plastic crack and about not spending enough money at my local store.
I buy hobby supplies and books at nexus. That's more than what I would spend if my only option was to pay current retail for everything. Maybe one day I'll find myself a sugar daddy or a better job. Until then I'll keep trying to do my best. And accepting offers for either option, if you have suggestions 😉

Tgis change also slaps tax on something like warhammer+ or the GW app subscription But thats really just a minor inconvenience more than anything

100% in agreement with Jack about shopping at Nexus.
Mike has been able to order in anything I have ever wanted to purchase from the hobby.

If you have an account there, it's functionally 10% off as well.

Next time you're in, ask about opening a loyalty account. I think its for every $100 you spend, you get $10 off something else. You can bank up the discount.

That's pretty much exactly how it works. You give your name everything you check out and every $100 you spend you get $10 off your next purchase. You also don't have to use it on your next purchase you can save up a whole bunch of credit if you want. Super helpfull when building an imperial knight army lol
