Playing 40k has only ever been fun, for myself, in concept. I have forced myself to try and enjoy this for far too long... Y'all have endured my rants and know this, so I will not get in to details.
The lore is kind of fun... I guess - Orks appeal to me for some unknown reason and a few other factions are also passingly interesting... But the underlying tones of the Imperium leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I really don't give a dead rat's rotting arse for their lore.
The models are pretty and converting is an enjoyable advwnture in imagination and ability... But if I sm not playing, why bother with collecting and storing an army? I highly doubt I will find a version of the game that is enjoysble AND has people playing stupid scenarios, as I would like to be.
I don't know... I really wanted to fit in snd make friends and stuff... I just never managed to find a place where I felt comfortable (which is mainly the result of my own anxieties, insecurities and inability to 'keep up' with the constant updating of rules... among other reasons...)
I want to be abld to push Orks around and play silly games with cool people... But it just sin't something I sm able to manage...
I don't even know who I am outside of Nexus snd my depression...
What I sm even doing?

Maybe you could use your orks for a game that allows any models from any company?

Stargrave exists, sure, but how many minis fo I sctuslly need to plsy that? How msny folks in the community?
The biggest problem with playing "not the curreng update snapshot of 40k" is the nearly non-existent playerbases for snything else. AoS gets by by being a GW product. I do not know how Infinity is managing to hold on, other than a dedicated and very small group of people...
I hear that "One Page Rules" has something accessible... But do you know anyone that plays? I don't.
I am frustrated, tired, having a bad day, hungry... But I do know that I sm absolutely done with 9th edition 40k and do not see that changing.
So, like... Why sm I holding on to an army that tskes up do much dpace and is mostly just a painful reminder of my inability to integrate socially or to have the brain-power to learn the rules for a stupid fuckinv gsme.
Also; fuck touchscreens... i hate yhis tech, do mucj.

With the advent of HH, maybe you can get your hands on a 7th ed Ork dex. I don't see why marines couldn't have encountered an ork world or two during the Crusade days, and it's a much less complex version of the game than 9th is.
It's not perfect, but it's an option for keeping your plastic army men on a table. Coming from a guy who is normally so busy, he doesn't get more than 20 or so games in a year.

I have the Xenos Index, if that counts?
If I could trade people some of the free time I have, I would.

Ill just chime in, I think that that about half my orks just sit on a shelf in my basement because I am happy with how they turned out even though they are not going to do much on the table. I know there are lots of people who have models that they don't play with.
Id say as long as they make you happy and you looking to generate capital to start a new project they are worth holding onto. One day my 120 fully painted and based boyz and 60 grots will be good enough to see the table again but for now 10-20 trukk boyz will have to do.

Yeah I'll second Jordan's point here, I still have my original firstborn marines and I'll never part with 'em. I like my pewter vanguard vets with their plasma pistols. I ain't flipping my customized scouts just because GW decided they had to be terrible to push phobos marines.
Case in point is six months ago I would've told you my space marine combat vehicles were gonna continue to be shelf warmers for the foreseeable future, but now a whole wack of them are about to enjoy time getting cored out in games of 30k - you never know. If you like them, don't sell them- honestly most people who engage with Warhammer have a lot more models they don't play with than ones they do, because arguably the bigger part of the hobby for a lot of us is the hobby anyway.

because arguably the bigger part of the hobby for a lot of us is the hobby anyway. This. Hell, my Death Guard have been sitting for years on a shelf, same as half the shelf worth of Thousand Sons models, Darksiders knights, etc. etc. I'm sure that once my Crons get built up and finished, they'll enjoy a similarly inviting spot on my model shelves. Speaking purely from my own perspective. Once I complete a unit for an army that I already do, or guaranteed will field; that unit is almost all but locked in and won't get sold. It's the rare occasion I sell models that are for a fieldable army. Really only if that unit no longer exists in the codex. Not saying that's what you should do, but from the looks of it lots of us sit with models on the shelf.

Just to pile on the hobby side
I sold my fully painted Iron Warriors, Dark Eldar, and Craftworld Eldar armies back when 6th edition came out because I just wasnt having fun anymore and decided to go try different things.
I have regretted those sales basically every day since (especially when my FB memories of the finished models pop up). I spent so much time and effort painting those models (that I mayble played collectively 100 games with during 5th edition) that it pains me to not see them on my display shelf at home now.
Im not at a point in my life where I no longer sell off painted models, even ones I dont use.

I am appreciating the perspectives that y'all are sharing.
You are right - I do regret selling off old armies and models snd likely will with this one, as well.
Space is at a premium for me, having just one room to store my life in. This collection I have inherited has really shone a light on this and I just do not have the spsce for thd whole collection.
Amusingly, the majority of the vehicles I have are better-suited for older editions of the game and are what take up the most space - almost a fully-packed shelf worth of stuff thrown in boxes... There are well over s dozen old trukks, trakks, buggies snd bikes - anyone want to play some Gorka-Morka? (Just joking... I would never commit to learning the rules, lol)
But...

I too have a butt-load of old models, painted and not, some not fielded for years. I have yet to sell an army as they have all been field-able at one time and probably will be again. Also, when I finish painting a unit I have invested enough of myself in it that letting go doesn't make sense to me unless I give it as a gift. (BTW I still have old Gorka-Morka stuff that I use with my orks.) I also have the space to keep all this stuff (well...you know).
Perhaps what you need is an inventory given your limited space. Three categories: KEEP, NOT GOING TO USE IT (aka get rid of), and TOO COOL TO GIVE UP (we all have those special models). Pair down your inventory and see how much space you have left. Rinse, repeat, until you are comfortable both in your space and with the army/armies you have left. Having inherited a lot of stuff may make letting go a bit easier as these were not chosen and/or painted by you.
Good luck with working it out.
