Hi, I'm Charles and I have been wanting to get into 40k tabletop for a long time. I've built the models on and off for a while but never really done a credible paint job and it's always made me shy away from getting to the next step of actually learning and playing the game. I have what I think to be a decent size Tyranid army and some bits of bobs of Orks, Necrons, Space Marines and Chaos SM. But no clue what to do from here. Between my limited time and smooth brain I find the few video tutorials online to be quite overwhelming so any suggestions would be wonderful.

Hi Charles! Glad as always to see a fellow Tyranid player! Midwinter Minis did up a basic intro to 40k video which isn't oppressively long and pretty helpful: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck7l1mEX9ZsIf you are looking to build your first 40k list, battlescribe (it's free!) is a very useful tool: battlescribe.netWahapedia has all the rules stuff online for free! wahapedia.ru/---------------- and if, like me, you do better learning something by actually doing it can always arrange intro starter games through our game coordinator section on the forums. Things are pretty slow at Nexus during the summer, and there's lots of people (myself included) that would be willing to run you through your first few games to get a handle on things. Welcome to the forum!

Welcome! As a new player the depth of rules in warhammer can be quite daunting, especially since many tutorials get focused on showcasing the depth and customization available or focused on the tournament rules and tend not to be focused on newer players just needing to start with the basics. Don't worry, we were all new once too, you'll get there! I strongly recommend starting with JUST the Core Rules PDF and playing a game of Combat Patrol in a casual/learning environment to get familiar with the basics. Once you learn the basic flow of the game and how to read the rules you'll quickly learn that there's a LOT of rules you don't really need to know to get playing. You can find the core rules in a PDF here: www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Lw4o3USx1R8sU7cQ.pdfThe first few pages will focus on showing you how to actually read the rules themselves, then a few pages on the different "phases" of each turn, and finally the rules contain a mission you can play that will get you started actually rolling dice. Don't worry, there's a LOT to learn, you won't get everything right away. It's best to throw some dice and laugh when you get things wrong. Once you're familiar with the basic flow of the game, some of the things you read in the rules will start to make a lot more sense.

Thanks very much you two. These resources look great and I will be going over them this week. I'm hoping to get two little armies going so I can convince my wife to help me learn the basics before I start bothering anyone. I have done what I think is my first ever paint job I can be proud of and will try to show it off in the paint section of the forum.
Thanks again

Hey Charles, Nice to hear. I'm fairly new too. I've only played a few games with people and some on my own at home. I agree with what the guys say to start with the free core rules, the very basics. The rules do seem very overwhelming but I think the extra stuff will seem easier once we get the basics down.
I understand how you feel about 'bothering' people, but I think most are happy to introduce us to the hobby. If you feel like playing any relaxed games with another 'newbie' and not worrying about missing rules, I'd also be happy play with you.

Welcome to the forum Charles, You definitely don’t need to feel like you’re bothering anyone. There are so many amazing people in our community and we love sharing our hobby with new people. I use to feel a lot of pressure to know all the rules and have a fully painted army when I first started but overtime I realized this is just supposed to be fun! I hope you’re enjoying your new hobby and good luck getting your wife to try it out, I’ve been trying for six years lol!

I would highly recommend getting an introductory game with someone on the forum. Rather than your poor wife It’s much easier when one person knows the rules. And most people have multiple armies so you wouldn’t even need to bring your own models. Also you should join the discord I posted about above, it’s an easier place to share pictures, and we would love to see what you have done.
