Haha ok, well I would definitely say don't mash them into the bottom of a cup. Swish in water, and pull them over a paper towel to remove the paint. Repeat until they are wiping clean. You never want or need to be pushing the point into a hard surface.
Sometimes I will run my nail over the bristles to remove drying bits, but I'm going out, toward the tip, so they aren't being bent backward.
Some masters brush soap from micheals is also cheap and works well to clean and condition the bristles after a painting session. I just wet the brush in water and drag it over the soap. Again, avoiding actions that would cause you to jam the point, or bend bristles.
I'm also a brush licker. But I'd recommend attempting to control that behaviour if you get into oils. Took me a while to get the taste of thinner out of my mouth.

brush soap is great.
do NOT mash your brush into the bottom of the cup. it will wreck it super quick.
also use my mouth to shape the bristles after it's clean... yeah it's probably not a great habit, but it works lol

On the topic of brushes, I still use synthetic brushes and I find they only last a month or so before they start fraying and I'm thinking about making the jump to sable. Are there any online stores based in Canada that you guys use?
I checked the brushes at Michael's and I can't tell if they are sable or synthetic or what lol.
