Needed a break from painting black and gold for my CSM army, Picked up Daemon Prince not knowing it is also a 40k character and of course had to do it over the AOS version. I think the base looks good but I'm not overly happy with the way one foot "connects".
Over all I think this is my best attempt yet at both painting and basing. What do you guys think, Any advice or critiques?

looking good... basing is well done!
Some nuln oil on the sword would be my suggestion, or even some "blood for the blood god" effect paint for that extra pop

Base looks fantastic. I do see what you mean with the connection issue. Something like that is easiest to plan for while building. In this case, I might have test-fit the prince onto the base during construction to see where his feet would land. At that point, the rock could have been extended a bit with greenstuff to give him a flater surface under that foot. This looks fine, I wouldn't mess with the paintjob to fiddle with it. Just another way to approach it.
Definitely a neat paintjob. From here, I guess the path to improvement would be to experiment with even more shading, and highlights. Could darken the recess of the sword and brighten the sharpened edge, to give it more depth.
Edit: Heh, mostly what Shannon said, I guess.

Thanks for the kind words and advice. Going to pick up some nuln oil this weekend.
May seem like a silly question, How do you highlight metallics? With the black surfaces I just took a dark grey, easy. But the metal surfaces I'm not sure how to make pop. Like the sword or gold armor. Do I just add white to the blade edges?
The base was just a piece of bark from my garden and I did dry fit but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make that foot look nice, Green stuff makes total sense and I picked some up last week but never even thought. I tried to build it up with super glue and it didn't work quite the way I was hoping.

For highlighting metallics, you can use lighter metallics. If I base coat leadbelcher, I can do an allover coat in nuln, then reapply leadbelcher, or ironhands steel where I want it to be brighter, avoiding the areas that need to be darker. Edge highlights are then done in stormhost silver.
The gold I did on my emperor's children is balthazar gold base, skullcrusher brass layer highlight, and liberator gold edge.
GW paints obviously, other brands have their own ranges.

Okay that makes more sense. I only have an Army Painter starting kit with 50 colours that has a few metallics in side, as well as about a dozen citadel. I Probably need a wider range then. I was looking at my colours trying to figure out what magic colour would make it pop.

What I was going to recommend is some nuln oil on the chain mail, muscle grooves and a little bit on the sword, add some blood on the sword too might be a good touch, if you want fresh looking blood add it over the oil, if your looking for old blood look add it under the oil.

Looking good. That's a very neat paint job. I think as others have mentioned would be shading to make it easier to read the muscles etc. any of the shades would work, nuln oil from gw or dark tone from army painter os good. for.the skin I'd almost do a purple or red wash then hit it with your base color to bring back the highlights.
that's a cool mini.
