My 1000 point army list is approximately 20% complete.

Looking good! I'm liking the purple - and the blue spot color shows up really well as a contrast.
I would suggest black base rims though... will up the contrast so there's a visual focus on the model more as the bright base rim won't pull the eye away.

The base rims are red out of laziness, really. And trying to keep the theme, but mostly laziness. I need a red layer under the cracked earth technical paint to sell the "barren mars" base aesthetic. So I did the rims as red at the same time.

If you want more dynamic/unique bases you could go to dollartree/dollarstore and get sheets of Corkboard or get display gravel stuff or aquarium rocks and paint them up in the same red as your base to add more depth/levels. You might find it fun and look forward to doing bases but the crackling effect is really nice and well done. Looking forward to see more.

More units painted. Main change this time was upgrading my varnish to a matte finish one, instead of using my wife's semi-gloss. Also, I didn't take the pictures in the basement this time.
After taking this picture, I hit the rail weapon and alchemical flask of the tech-priest with my high gloss varnish so those parts would shine a bit more under light.
I estimate I'm 50% done on my 1000 point list now. I have two big point Ironstrider units in the pipeline, which should put me up to about 70% complete. Then I descend into the hell of infantry painting for a few weeks.

Changing up the varnish and changing the lighting/spot is definitely a good move and something that might make the infantry painting better/quicker is assembly line, depending on how you paint, if it's un assembled do all the arms, then torsos then heads, ect. If it's allready assembled then I would do your main/primary colour on a set of 10, the do your secondary on the 10 models then what is left, so your not jumping between so many colours and stages on each model.

Yep, I paint by assembly line. I prefer doing it that way for all of my units. For each of the troops I'm putting up here, there's five more in the storage box. I feel assembly line saves on paint as well as time. The bigger the unit, the less I need to do sub-assemblies. AdMech are a lot more 'fiddly' to assemble and paint compared to my wife's Tyranids, in my opinion, so I end up doing a lot of sub-assemblies. My AdMech skitarii infantry get broken up into sub-assemblies: legs, torso and head with non-gun arm, gun arm, and backpack. I have four or five boxes of skitarii, so my plan is to set up sub-assemblies for the 'first' model out of each box to be done all at the same time. Biggest problem is when my cat gets curious about what I'm doing and wants to 'help' by knocking over my assembly line staging box.
