Hello, I'm new to warhammer 40k and wanted to get into the hobby. There were just some things that were kinda vague in the intro content I read/watched. So I don't quite understand: 1) the different game modes (looking to learn standard tourney rules and killteam) 2) how the command phase works 3) what CP means in these rulesets I belive that's all the stuff I was confused about right now.
Also, if anyone knows where I can get my hands on some dirt cheap (potentially free) used armies as I am a broke uni student. I'd ideally play sisters of battle or Astra militarum, but beggars can't be choosers so I'll learn what ever army people are willing to sell/give me.

Hi welcome!
1. The standard for tournaments would be 2000 points, now using the Arks of Omen Chapter Approved rules book. Which is an updated set of rules and missions, which will be active for about 6 months and then they will change again. Kill team is actually an entirely different game, but using the same models. But different rule book, and even how units move and shoot and fight. 2. The command phase, is normally at the start of your turn when your characters hand out buffs to units, and you do some scoring book-keeping. Not really a big deal, once you have played a few games. 3. CP is "command points" which is what you use to activate "stratagems" which have a CP cost, for special powerful abilities on your units. You gain CP throughout the game which you can then spend on these stratagems .
Definitely take a look on facebook marketplace, and there are buy and sell facebook groups as well, which can have some good deals.

Ah, and where would I find these "missions" and how do they affect gameplay.
Also apologies, I was informed killteam was a game mode in which the objective was to wipe out the opposing army, which I wished to learn to play with a friend of mine who is trying to learn the game with me. (And the standard rules was for games nights at a local store)

Wahapedia is a website that has a lot of information about the game (updated for free) and also has most armies represented there. So a good place to get free information.
Free models are a whole another thing, and unlikely to happen, but there is a trade forum here that has used models at a discount.
I recommend watching learn to play videos on Youtube. Tabletop Titans on youtube has a bunch of beginner how to play videos in addition to more competitive content.
40k days are generally Saturdays at Nexus so stopping by to see how a game plays can also be very helpful (plus you can also see the armies you might want to collect at some point)

Neat, I figured free was a long shot (but hey a guy can dream) I intend on going to the nexus as often as I can to pick up rules and pointers on person. But they directed me here in the mean time. I'll check out that link. Thank you.

If you're around you can always come spectate the club championships going down mid Feb
(do we still have restrictions on how many people are allowed in Nexus?)

If you're around you can always come spectate the club championships going down mid Feb (do we still have restrictions on how many people are allowed in Nexus?) no restrictions anymore on people being in the back room during tournaments. Plus clubs is capped at 32 this year - we had more than that for Secret Santa!
